Job Summary: Responsible for the provision and coordination of patient-centered care. The Registered Nurse (RN) coordinates care to achieve desired outcomes, participates in patient and family teaching, and provides leadership by delegating and working cooperatively with ancillary, nursing and other patient team members to maintain standards for professional nursing practice and performance in the clinical setting. The RN must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and service to all patients.

Actively and consistently contributes to department operations and communications, and upholds standards of AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank you) in patient communication. Essential functions apply to all RN positions along with additional department-specific functions as listed.

Qualifications/

Experience:

  • One (1) year of experience preferred in the area applied for.
  • In-depth knowledge of best practices in area/specialty applied for.
  • Adaptable to changing work schedules and patient needs.
  • Critical thinking, service excellence and good interpersonal communication skills, ability to read/comprehend written instructions, strong organizational skills, ability to follow verbal instructions, and PC (computer) skills.
  • A capacity to learn, synthesize, make critical judgments, work independently, place patients and families first, and collaborate with team members who are recognized leaders within health care.
Essential Functions
  • Change dressings, insert catheters, and start IVs.
  • Accurately obtain and record results of assessment, care delivery, medication administration, treatments, and responses in the electronic medical record or designated documentation packets.
  • Adjust specialized medical equipment as needed, interpret and record measurements.
  • Monitor patients’ vital signs and report adverse reactions to medication in a timely manner.
  • Educate patients and families on surgical procedures and post-surgery care.
  • Maintain and update patient files, medical charts, and health records.
  • Collect current symptoms, detailed patient history, and coordinate with healthcare team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Organize and plan care of patients, assess treatment rationale and delivery, follow protocols, administer medications with accuracy, and educate patients.
  • Attend and/or complete monthly, annual, and assigned training.
  • Perform daily checks of and clean equipment such as monitors, code equipment, crash cart checks and oxygen cylinders.
  • Prepare and administer medications according to state nursing standards and facility policies.
  • Use clear, concise, professional communication with coworkers, patients, and all customers internal and external.
  • Utilize AIDET in interactions with patients and family members; use white boards for patient communication.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including transfer, discharge, referrals, and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
  • Monitor patients using appropriate equipment as ordered.
  • Triages patients appropriately using the ESI (Emergency Severity Index) system.
  • Arrive to work prepared to receive patient report on time.
  • Provide discharge instructions, follow-up care and education to patients and family members.
  • Abide by HIPAA regulations.
  • Use SBAR when communicating with oncoming shift, physicians, and other services.
  • Apply the Nursing Process (ADPIE) to secure individualized and methodical patient care.
  • Speak up to stop the line and escalate potential safety events when necessary.
  • Act quickly and with urgency in delivery of patient care.
  • Coordinate with medical staff providers, EMS, coworkers, patients, and family members to stabilize patients professionally and calmly.
  • May float to other areas of the hospital as assigned.
  • Stock assigned rooms and keep work areas clean.
  • Attend and/or complete monthly, annual, and assigned training.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Surgical Services (Pre-Op/Same Day Surgery/Circulating/Recovery)
  • Assess, plan, intervene and evaluate care of pre- and post-operative patients.
  • Instruct patients and families regarding medications and treatment instructions.
  • Maintain and review patient records including posting tests and examination results.
  • Administer medications according to physician orders.
  • Provide and evaluate patients pre-, during, and post-surgery.
  • Circulate for specialties such as General, Orthopedic, OB/Gyn, Podiatry, GI, Vascular.
  • Document in electronic medical records and logbooks.
  • Stock assigned area and maintain clean work spaces.
  • Participate in department performance improvement initiatives.
  • Provide care throughout the continuum.
