Overview
Selected candidates will be scheduled for an interview at the City of Norwalk Hiring Event on Saturday, March 7, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The City of Norwalk is looking for experienced Senior Lifeguards to join their team and help keep the community safe and healthy. As a Senior Lifeguard, you will be responsible for teaching swimming lessons, serving as a pool lifeguard, and providing lead direction to the team of Lifeguards.
This position offers a leadership role with opportunities to teach aquatics classes and make a positive impact on participants’ safety and enjoyment.
All applicants must be at least 16 years of age by April 1, 2026.
Mandatory Training DatesAll selected applicants must be available to attend the following mandatory training dates before their first day of work:
- May 8-9 (Friday and Saturday) from 8am - 5pm - Recreation In-Service Training (All Recreation and Park Services staff must attend)
- May 30-31 (Saturday and Sunday) from 8am - 6pm - Aquatics In-Service Training (Supplemental training for Lifeguards, Instructor Guards, Senior Guards, and Recreation Leaders I and II under Aquatics)
- Candidates interested in lifeguard certification must attend training on one of two weekends:
- Option 1:
March 13-15 - Option 2:
March 20-22

- On both weekends, training times are Friday 4pm - 9pm;
Saturday 8am - 5pm;
Sunday 8am - 5pm
- Assist in supervising pool employees by providing work direction and instruction in lifeguard duties and pool area maintenance; supervise and conduct swimming, diving and lifesaving classes.
- Monitor the swimming pool; enforce safety rules.
- Patrol the pool and aquatics facility; maintain an attentive lookout for accidents; warn against dangerous practices; enter water to rescue persons in distress; administer artificial respiration and first aid as needed.
- Teach swimming lessons according to a prescribed routine and curriculum; test participants for skill levels; promote participants to more advanced classes.
- Assist in implementing aquatics competitions; assist in organizing and supervising water sports, contests, carnivals and pageants.
- Perform miscellaneous duties such as answering phones, running errands, securing supplies, conducting classes, selling tickets, collecting fees, and assisting with setup for classes and events.
- Respond to public inquiries about aquatics programs by phone, mail, or at meetings.
- Maintain related records and statistics for aquatics programs.
- Assist in pool maintenance and routine cleaning and upkeep of the pool facility.
- Knowledge of lifesaving methods and first aid; pool safety rules and regulations; pool cleaning and maintenance; supervision principles; and swimming and lifesaving instruction techniques.
- Ability to organize and supervise pool personnel; organize and instruct swimming and lifesaving classes; rescue distressed swimmers and provide first aid; maintain order with patrons and enforce safety regulations; use safety equipment; establish effective working relationships; communicate effectively; and follow instructions. Ability to speak Spanish is desirable.
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary. Examples include: graduation from high school; completion of American Red Cross Lifeguard Training; completion of American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor; two years’ experience as a pool lifeguard. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Trainer certificate is highly desirable.
