Transportation Safety Training Coordinator

Under general supervision plans, develops, and administers safety and related training programs for the Transportation Department. Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations related to transportation safety. Serves as a technical resource for transportation safety and compliance.

This is a single incumbent class and is characterized by responsibility for planning, developing and administering safety programs and safety training for the Transportation Department.

Works under the general direction of the Director of Transportation. May exercise lead responsibilities over support staff.

Conducts DMV statutory training for Commercial Drivers License holders in order to maintain Verification of Transit Training certificates; documents training and sends forms to DMV; maintains statistics and logs on training; signs as City designee on DMV Employer Testing Program.

Serves as chair of the Accident Review Board monthly meetings; issues follow-up letters from recommendations of the Board; schedules and chairs appeal hearings and issues follow-up letters of decisions. Serves as department representative to City Safety Committee meetings.

Conducts classroom and behind-the-wheel training for new hires, department CDL holders, new equipment, ADA, defensive driving, injury & illness prevention, drug & alcohol, emergency and accident handling procedures. Counsels coach operators on safety related issues.

Reviews qualifications of applicants and DMV printouts; participates on oral boards and Highway Patrol inspections.

Trains department employees in DOT mandated Drug/Alcohol testing program and policies. Transports employees to medical provider for random drug/alcohol testing. Communicates with random selection provider and receives negative results from medical provider.

Prepares required monthly reports; records information for safety incentive program; serves as relief operator as necessary. Serves as backup Transit Operations Supervisor as needed to supervise daily operations of transit system.

California Code of Regulations;
Commercial Drivers Handbook; ADA; safe coach driving techniques;
City safety policies, procedures and practices; accident investigation techniques. Ability to: drive a commercial coach; develop and conduct safety training; understand and interpret laws, regulations, policies and procedures; conduct accident investigation and safety hearings; work independently; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; and conduct research, compile data and prepare reports.

Education and/or Experience Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary. Example combinations include:
Graduation from high school or equivalent plus completion of technical courses in safety or other related subjects, and four years of related experience including experience in coach operations and at least one year of supervision.

Required Licenses and Certificates Possession of an appropriate California driver license, VTT certificate, medical certificate, and DOT certification as a trainer at time of hire.
