Position Summary

Instruct students in their specific area of specialty; help students learn subject matter and skills that broaden their learning experiences and support their development to meet high expectations; communicate with parents; create a classroom environment conducive to learning; participate in professional learning.

Essential Functions
  • Adhere to the Connecticut Code of Professional Responsibility
  • Ensures safety of students
  • Implements the Norwalk Board of Education and administrative policies, rules, regulations, and directives
  • Manages the classroom and individual student behavior to maintain an advantageous learning environment.
  • Prepares lesson plans that achieve clear objectives, uses appropriate techniques, and serve the needs of all learners in the classroom
  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required
  • Attends parent/teacher conferences
  • Assesses student learning on a continual basis and identifies areas of intervention if needed
  • Follows the scope and sequence of the instructional program as defined and approved by the Norwalk Board of Education
  • Maintains respect for confidential information
  • Keeps parents up-to-date on student progress through use of interim reports, report cards, and/or conferences
  • Designs instruction to meet the needs of all students in both individual and small-group settings as needed.
  • Design clear and specific learning assessments
  • Maintain a positive learning environment that encourages open communication between the teacher and learner
  • Maintain a positive school community image that encourages ethical student behavior
  • Maintain ongoing communication with parents
For Special Education Teachers
  • Prepare student education plans in consultation with IEP team members
  • Design instruction, both individual and small group, which parallels the general education curriculum
  • Act as coordinator of IEP implementation with general education staff
  • Monitor student progress, participate in review and revision of IEP, as appropriate
  • Assist other professional staff in diagnosis of learning disorders, development of planned remediation, and evaluation of student progress
  • Maintain appropriate student data and other records and submit reports as required by State and Federal law
  • Attend all PPT meetings for assigned students
  • Develop and implement strategies in partnership with families to positively affect student learning
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in the selection of textbooks, equipment, and other educational materials
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships
  • Participate in professional learning by attending seminars and workshops to improve instructional practice and positively affect student achievement

  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing

  • Excellent public relations skills
  • Ability to foster and facilitate learning and classroom management
Qualifications
  • Active subject matter certificate 511 as required by the Connecticut State Department of Education
  • AMI or NAMI Montessori teacher completion, enrollment, or willingness to obtain training
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Norwalk Board of Education may find appropriate.
