The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – West Region Public Programs – has three job opportunities for full and part‑time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) positions on the second shift located at the Lower Fairfield Center (LFC), Norwalk.

Position Highlights

Location: Norwalk, CT
Shift: Second Shift

Schedules (biweekly):

  • PCN 19868, Full Time – 70 hours/biweekly. Week 1 (35 hrs):
    Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday 2‑p.m.–9:30‑p.m. (Regular days off Monday and Tuesday). Week 2 (35 hrs):
    Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 2‑p.m.–9:30‑p.m. (Regular days off Friday and Wednesday).
  • PCN 18075, Part Time – 35 hours/biweekly. Week 1 (21 hrs):
    Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 2‑p.m.–9:30‑p.m. (Regular days off Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday). Week 2 (14 hrs):
    Wednesday, Thursday 2‑p.m.–9:30‑p.m. (Regular days off Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday).
  • PCN 103466, Part Time – 56 hours/biweekly. Week 1 (24 hrs):
    Friday, Monday, Tuesday 2‑p.m.–10:30‑p.m. (Regular days off Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday). Week 2 (32 hrs):
    Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday 2‑p.m.–10:30‑p.m. (Regular days off Friday, Monday, Tuesday).

Note:

Work schedule flexibility is required to meet the demands of the job.

Benefits

Benefits may be pro‑rated for part‑time positions. In addition to the base annual salary, licensed practical nurses assigned to the second and third shifts may receive a yearly “retention” bonus of $600, paid in two installments (July and December) after one year of service. Responsibilities
  • Assist doctors and nurses in the general care and treatment of individuals.
  • Measure doses and administer medications, including insulin injections.
  • Document medications using appropriate forms.
  • Perform narcotic counts.
  • Check and administer intravenous medications.
  • Report changes in individuals to doctors.
  • Ensure restraints are applied correctly.
  • Transcribe doctors’ medication orders.
  • Dispense certain medications in a doctor’s absence.
  • Apply topical medication.
  • Take and chart temperatures, pulses, and respirations.
  • Perform simple nursing treatments.
  • Monitor general individual needs, including personal hygiene.
  • Report on individual conditions and behavior.
  • Keep the unit safe and healthy.
  • Administer enemas or suppositories.
  • Perform Foley catheterization care.
  • Orient individuals concerning medications and their use.
  • Perform emergency first aid.
  • Drive individuals to necessary appointments/outings.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • License or temporary permit to practice nursing in Connecticut issued by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing.
  • Or hold a Multistate or Compact Licensed Practical Nurse license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience providing nursing services to both children and adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities and autism spectrum disorder.
  • Experience communicating with non‑verbal individuals.
  • Experience supporting individuals that may exhibit mild to severe challenging behaviors.
  • Experience with basic nursing skills including, but not limited to, administering medication and nutrition via G‑Tube or J‑Tube, glucose monitoring, insulin administration, respiratory treatments, colostomy, cecostomy, urostomy care, wound care, and catheterization.
  • Experience with infection control practices.
  • Experience communicating with interdisciplinary teams and medical providers both over the telephone and in written correspondence.
  • Experience using Microsoft applications including Outlook, Excel, Teams, and Word.
Special Requirements

Incumbents may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver’s license for designated positions.

Working Conditions

Incumbents may be required to lift/restrain individuals; may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to some risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
