Introduction
The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – West Region has a part‑time 2nd‑Shift Head Nurse position at the Lower Fairfield Center (LFC), Norwalk.
Position HighlightsLocation: Norwalk
Type: Second Shift – Part Time (40 hours biweekly)
Schedule: Week 1:
Friday 2–10:30 p.m.;
Tuesday 2–10:30 p.m.;
Wednesday 2:30–11 p.m.;
Week 2:
Saturday 2–10:30 p.m.;
Sunday 2–10:30 p.m.
- Coordinate all medical services for approximately 10–12 residents in a continuous operation intermediate care facility.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to optimize outcomes and ensure compliance with clinical quality standards, policies, and ICF regulations.
- Provide clinical oversight to LPNs delivering direct care to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Communicate health and safety information to internal and external partners, verbally and in writing.
- Apply rehabilitative and interdisciplinary healthcare practices to support residents.
- Plan, implement, and evaluate nursing and health care plans; assess, document and maintain records in compliance with ICF and JCAHO standards.
- Act as Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional (QIDP) when required.
- Participate in emergencies and interdisciplinary meetings; recommend policies and standards.
- Lead staff training, performance evaluation, and professional development.
- Manage caseloads and prioritize workflow.
- Minimum: 2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
- Educational substitution: A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing may substitute for 1 year of experience.
- Credential requirement:
Licensed Registered Nurse, Connecticut or Multistate/Compact RN. - Experience with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities in an ICF setting.
- Proficient in supervisory management and interdisciplinary teamwork.
- Experience with payroll, hiring, procurement, client accounting, data collection, and scheduling.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal; organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel) and familiarity with internal data systems (e‑CAMRIS, CoreCT).
- Good problem‑solving ability and ability to work in challenging environments.
- Advanced knowledge of care for medically fragile individuals, including rehabilitation and interdisciplinary processes.
- Experience supervising staff across multiple locations and developing work priorities.
- Knowledge of State of Connecticut and federal benefit/entitlement programs.
- Fluency in a foreign language or proficiency in American Sign Language for designated positions.
- Must possess and retain a Connecticut RN license or relevant multistate/compact license.
- May be required to travel.
May be required to lift and restrain residents; exposure to communicable diseases and risk of injury from assaultive individuals; exposure to disagreeable conditions.
