General
Summary:
Under assessment and direction of the Staff Nurse (RN) and according to established policies and procedures, performs patient care activities in order to assist health care providers in performing various technical and clerical procedures in the patient care area. The point of care technician assists with the activities of the nursing staff, the patient, the physician, other hospital departments and visitors.
Education, Licensure, Registration and
Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
Ability to read and interpret written/oral instructions.
Ability to understand basic math and numerical reasoning.
Current BLS certification.
STNA preferred.
Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
Basic computer skills.
Essential Functions:
Helps prepare unit, patient rooms, and patient beds for receiving admissions or transfers.
Assists in and accompanies patients (as necessary) in the admission, transfer, and discharge procedures.
Utilizes call light system as patient needs present and demonstrates prompt responses to call lights.
Provides assistance with activities of daily living including and not limited to bathing, feeding, dressing, grooming, and mobilizing throughout the shift. Will provide post-mortem care, when necessary.
Completes patient rounds and accurately records vital signs, weight, height, intake/output, consumption, and other required documentation into electronic medical record (EMR).
Provides patient care including positioning, lifting, turning, and ambulating patient, utilizing assistive devices as required.
Under supervision, performs additional skills and testing such as bladder scans, specimen collection, telemetry application/removal, blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, removal of urinary catheter, and removal of IV catheter.
Reports any change observed in patient condition to licensed nurse promptly.
Assist in maintaining a safe, clean environment. Reports equipment out of order, cleans equipment as necessary, and reports linen needs and supply stock on the unit.
Assists all staff to ensure optimal patient care. Knowledgeable in purpose and significance of plan of care and in its use. Promotes a team-oriented environment.
Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor or nurse manager. This includes 1:1 sitter with patients as needed for patient safety.
Attends all required safety training programs and can describe their responsibilities relate to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
