Job Summary: A Special Education (Learning Services) Paraprofessional supports students that require additional support or services as indicated on their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or under the discretion of the Learning Services staff. A Learning Services Paraprofessional can be assigned to support a building, grade, classroom, group of students or individual student at the discretion of the Director of Student Services or designee.

Reports to: Director of Student Services Status: FTE = 88% 10 Month Contract Essential Job Functions:
  • Support the diversity of the student population through cultural and family engagement and the inclusion of diverse learners throughout the school.
  • Responsible for assisting the classroom teacher in the instruction of an individual student including assistance in the laboratories, washrooms, playgrounds, gymnasiums, lunchrooms, libraries, field trips and all other educational settings as determined by the classroom teacher.
  • Assist the student(s) in the areas of behavior management, instructional support, activities of daily living, social skills training, task redirection, etc.
  • Provides reinforcement to student(s) of direct material initially taught by the classroom teacher and/or Learning Services Liaison.
  • Responsible for guiding any enrichment work, and remedial work set up by the classroom teacher, Learning Services Liaison and/or Learning Services Provider.
  • Assists individual student(s) in any testing.
  • Responsible for implementing any behavior plans.
  • Communicates as needed with various groups of people outside the classroom including social worker, parents, school psychologist, occupational therapist, speech therapist and physical therapist to assure smooth transition and understanding of student(s).
  • Assists in implementing various activities prescribed by various outside service providers (i.e. school psychologist, occupational therapist, speech therapist).
  • Maintains a daily student's activity log.
  • Conferring and planning with teachers related to IEP objectives and/or modifications, and providing documentation.
  • Assists the certified staff in devising special strategies for reinforcing learning materials and skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Attends parent/teacher conferences as required.
  • Assistive technology support - Devices need daily updating and data inputting. The SLP and LS Teachers complete the current updating.
  • Writing and updating social stories.
  • Management of adaptive equipment ("tools", seats, etc.). Maintain inventory, distribute under the direction of the OT. Oversee classroom usage of tools.
  • Low Tech Augmentative Communication management. Making visual schedules, using board maker, first/then boards, laminating, organizing materials under the direction of the OT/SLP/LS teachers.
  • Performs other duties as may be necessary and assigned by the Director of Student Services or designee.
