Position: TRUCK, AUTO, AND EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Fleet Maintenance Superintendent, ensures the operational readiness of the municipal and public safety fleet through expert diagnostics and repair of light duty vehicles, heavy trucks, and specialized Public Works machinery.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Repairs, overhauls, maintains, and services automotive, light, heavy, and specialized mechanical equipment, including police and fire apparatus

Utilize the fleet management software. Inspect and assess mechanical problems and reports to Lead Mechanic.

Must support or work on snow removal or emergency operations and on-call duty rotations as required.

NONESSENTIAL DUTIES

Performs other related duties as directed by the Fleet Maintenance Superintendent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanical trade.

Ability to deal effectively with others.

Ability to interpret electrical diagrams.

Ability to follow oral instructions.

Ability to diagnose defects and determine necessary repairs.

Working knowledge of the internal combustion engine and diesel-powered equipment.

A strength in body repair and painting as well as welding and metal fabrication.

Diagnostic experience preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma, or equivalent. Education must be supplemented by at least four years of any combination of progressively responsible automotive, truck, and/or heavy equipment repair experience. Must possess a valid State of Connecticut Driver's License and obtain a Commercial Driver's License, through the City, within one year from the date of hire.

Must supply necessary tools required to perform the duties of the position.

Employees in this position are required to have and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties; must be able to work in confined spaces, perform work using a respirator and operate tools and equipment. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, reel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.

The employee is required to stand, talk and hear. The employee is required to walk; occasionally sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability adjust focus.

Must be able to read and comprehend basic instructions and write repair orders.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. Employees are required to work long hours in adverse weather conditions such as during snow, rain, sleet, and/or windstorms. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Important Information

In order to be considered applicants must demonstrate on their application that they meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

You must reside within the City of Norwich 60 miles from Norwich within one year of appointment.

Examination will consist of 100% written OR 100% oral OR 100% experience and training.
