Highways Operative

Summary

To carry out general maintenance works and operations, working with a Chargehand, undertaking a wide range of routine and cyclical works. Respond to emergencies and call‑outs during or out of hours on rotas as required and assist with winter maintenance activities as a second man or driver’s mate. Includes apprentices who have fully completed training.

• Current driving licence
• CSCS card if client required
• Minimum level of everyday behaviour as set out in the company behaviours matrix

• Have and be able to apply a wide range of generalist skills
• Understand risk assessments and assess accordingly to safe systems of work
• Be able to understand and carry out work as set out in a specification
• Generally hold 12 months+ experience
• Potential & interest in obtaining LGV licence
• Undertaken training in general health & safety awareness, risk assessment awareness, traffic management and use of PDA as required
• Ability to use small plant and equipment
• Ability to operate mini excavator

• Prepared to work varying hours to meet the needs of the business
• Willingness to apply skills to a variety of different highways jobs, with changing team members
• Prepared to develop and undertake relevant training and qualifications
• Be able to complete record sheets, paper or electronic
• Take responsibility for plant and equipment
• Use own initiative
• Understand and be responsible for own safety, plus that of those around
• Available for emergency and/or winter call‑outs

Permanent

Full Time – 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday
