Job Summary

The Ophthalmic Technician performs a range of duties that prepare the patient to see the doctor. It is direct patient care, with on the job training.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Obtain medical and eye history from patient
  • Documenting information using an EMR (electronic medical record)
  • Prepare examination and treatment rooms
  • Perform screening and testing to prepare the patient for the doctor's exam. This includes:
    • Visual acuity
    • Color vision screening
    • Auto and manual lensometry
    • Auto and manual refraction
    • Tonometry
    • Amsler grid
    • Pupil evaluation
    • Other testing as needed
  • Administer eye medications
  • May assist physicians during minor surgical procedures
  • Maintain and calibrate ophthalmic equipment
  • Refill and prescribe medication on doctor's behalf
  • Complete prior authorizations for patient medication

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • We are willing to train
  • Medical experience preferred but not required
Physical Requirements
  • Sitting, standing, bending, reaching, stooping, walking, lifting
  • Ability to see, hear and speak with sufficient capability to perform assigned tasks
  • Driving independently to other facilities
Working Conditions
  • Travel to other locations is necessary
  • Occupational exposure
    - Category II exposure to blood-borne pathogens and may encounter chemical hazards.
