Job Overview

FM Post-Doctoral Fellow – Advanced Nuclear and Emerging Energy Risks, Norwood, MA.

Scope

The Emerging Risk research group at FM seeks a post-doctoral fellow to conduct research on risk assessment and mitigation strategies for next‑generation energy systems, primarily focused on advanced nuclear technologies such as small modular reactors (SMRs) and microreactors. The role may also extend to grid resilience, energy storage, and carbon capture. The fellow will work closely with multidisciplinary teams and publish findings that inform engineering practices, risk management, and insurance decision‑making.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct research on the safety, reliability, and risk implications of advanced nuclear reactor technologies and other emerging energy systems.
  • Develop and apply quantitative and qualitative risk assessment methodologies, including probabilistic risk assessment, system reliability modeling, and scenario analysis.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate research findings into engineering guidelines.
  • Analyze data and model outputs to identify key risk drivers and propose mitigation strategies.
  • Publish research findings in peer‑reviewed journals and present at technical conferences and industry forums.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Energy Systems, Risk Assessment, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in advanced nuclear technologies (e.g., SMRs, Gen IV reactors) and/or emerging energy infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in risk‑modeling tools and statistical analysis software.
  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks and safety standards in the energy sector.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
Position Details

This is a limited‑term position of up to three years, renewable annually. The role is based at FM’s Norwood, MA office and focuses on performable and publishable research as part of a strategic research program under senior mentorship.
