Job Summary

The Grants Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of Marin Humane’s grants program, including cultivation and stewardship of the organization’s relationships with foundations; securing grant funding to support Marin Humane’s strategic, capital, and operational goals and needs; and collaboration with the Development team to increase revenue for Marin Humane. The Grants Manager also has a solid understanding of Marin Humane’s wide-ranging programs and services to generate compelling and successful grant applications.

They will report to the Director of Philanthropy and work closely with senior managers, staff, donors, and institutional funders including foundations and other organizations. They are accountable for accomplishing department goals, working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, and supporting the mission, goals, and philosophy of Marin Humane.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES DEVELOP PLANS AND STRATEGIES FOR THE PURSUIT OF GRANT FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
  • Maintain, track, and expand grants program with private and public funders (including corporations and foundations) including ongoing analysis of funding landscape, prospect identification, grant proposal submissions, and grant awards received and declined.
  • Develop, implement and measure strategy to create shared commitment to the pursuit of grant funding among program and department leaders.
  • Meet or exceed annual budget goals set for grant income.
LEAD THE PROCESS OF THE ENTIRE GRANT CYCLE
  • Liaise with Marin Humane Vice Presidents and directors to identify programmatic priorities and develop compelling proposals and work with appropriate staff to co-author compelling applications.
  • Identify promising grant opportunities and work closely with staff to review proposal requirements, budgets, and deadlines to ensure proposals are accurately stated, aligned with mission and goals, and feasible if funded.
  • Establish and oversee the process and procedures for getting well written proposals submitted and awarded.
  • Ensure attachments required are accurate and approved by appropriate staff.
  • Build, manage, and communicate annual grants calendar to track pre- and post-award activities and stewardship planning.
  • Maintain detailed records of all applications, correspondence, proof of funding, Grant Agreements, and interim and final reports in print and electronic form, including adding to Marin Humane’s Raiser’s Edge database.
  • Communicate restrictions to VP of Finance and the Development team to ensure fund use is in compliance.
  • When appropriate, conduct reviews with staff involved with grant writing to assess grant denials, proposal improvement, and future submissions.
  • Working closely with the Finance team, monitor grant funding to ensure accurate distribution and financial recording.
RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT AND COORDINATION
  • Cultivate a proactive approach (including but not limited to managing a portfolio of active and prospective funders) to engage representatives from foundations and other funding agencies, to build relationships and present concepts for consideration both within and beyond traditional grant cycles and formal calls for applications.
  • When needed, act as a liaison between Marin Humane program staff and the staff at the grant making organization to have regular communications and solid partnerships with funders.
  • Work closely with both the Development and Marketing & Communications teams to make sure Marin Humane provides the pre-approved public recognition of the funder, consistent with funder’s preferences and to determine what if any public announcement and recognition Marin Humane, as a recipient of a grant, will do.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND INDUSTRY ENGAGEMENT
  • Build and maintain current knowledge base on emerging issues, purposes and trends regarding philanthropy and grants in animal welfare and related/complementary fields (e.g., public health, social welfare, sustainability).
