About the Role
Catholic Central is growing and so is our need for passionate, mission‑driven Guidance Counselors. The Guidance Counselor supports the academic, personal, social‑emotional, and college/career development of students in a faith‑centered, college‑preparatory environment. Through counseling, academic advising, collaboration, and proactive student support, the Guidance Counselor helps students realize their potential while fostering growth consistent with the mission and values of Detroit Catholic Central High School.
WhatYou’ll Do Develop Young Men of Faith and Character
- Foster meaningful relationships that encourage students' intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and moral development.
- Encourage students to demonstrate personal responsibility, sound decision‑making, resilience, and respect for others.
- Partner with families, faculty, campus ministry, and school leadership to support the holistic development of each student.
- Serve as a positive role model who contributes to a welcoming, inclusive, and faith‑filled school community.
- Provide individual and small‑group counseling related to academic planning, personal concerns, social‑emotional development, and goal setting.
- Assist students in developing effective study habits, organizational skills, and academic success strategies.
- Identify students who may benefit from additional interventions and coordinate appropriate referrals to internal or external resources.
- Support students experiencing academic, behavioral, emotional, or personal challenges.
- Maintain appropriate confidentiality while exercising sound professional judgment and complying with applicable legal and ethical standards.
- Guide students through course selection and multi‑year academic planning aligned with graduation requirements and post‑secondary goals.
- Monitor student academic progress and collaborate with teachers, administrators, and families to support student success.
- Maintain accurate student records and documentation in accordance with school policies and applicable regulations.
- Assist with scheduling, student transitions, and academic planning initiatives.
- Support students in exploring college, career, military, and vocational pathways.
- Provide guidance regarding college admissions, standardized testing, scholarships, financial aid, and post‑secondary planning.
- Assist students in identifying opportunities that align with their interests, abilities, and long‑term goals.
- Build collaborative relationships with students, parents, faculty, and administrators.
- Participate in parent conferences, student support meetings, and multidisciplinary team discussions.
- Partner with teachers and school leadership to identify and address student needs.
- Serve as a resource to faculty regarding student wellness, academic achievement, and social‑emotional development.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, retreats, student activities, and school events.
- Support school‑wide wellness initiatives and preventive education programming.
- Contribute to a positive, respectful, and mission‑driven culture that promotes student success and well‑being.
- Master’s degree in school counseling or a closely related field.
- Valid and unexpired State of Michigan credentials.
- Two to three years of counseling experience in a high school or comparable educational setting preferred.
- Experience supporting adolescents in academic advising, social‑emotional development, and college/career planning.
- Strong counseling, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build trusting relationships with adolescents and their families.
- Knowledge of adolescent development and best practices in school counseling.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality while exercising sound professional judgment.
- Excellent organizational, problem‑solving, and time management skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with multiple stakeholders.
- Proficiency with student information systems and Microsoft Office or Google Workspace.
- An understanding of the role that a Catholic education plays in carrying forth the mission of the Catholic Church and an acceptance without reservation that a Detroit Catholic Central High Guidance Counselor performs a ministerial function.
- Willing to complete required Archdiocese of Detroit training.
- Willing to submit to drug testing, fingerprinting, and a criminal background check.
- Ability to work in a school environment and move throughout the campus during the workday.
- May be required to sit, stand, walk, and use a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with students, families, faculty, and staff.
