About the Role

The Business Commercial Counsel is responsible for providing legal and/or business support to the Automotive business division Customer Account Management (CAM) Groups and its Strategic Business Units (SBU), and will interface with related business functions including sales, engineering, product, customer service, finance, procurement, and supply chain. This position reports directly to the Director, Corporate Counsel for the Automotive Division, North America, and works closely with legal leadership to support senior operational, functional, and division clients on significant matters impacting the global enterprise.

The successful candidate handles complex negotiations and establishes systems to deliver legal support, completing critical assignments with little to no supervision.

Your Team

This position routinely interfaces with operational or functional teams managing legal risk, making legal decisions and escalations based upon Legal department guidelines, the company's exposure, and GAR.

What You Will Do

Managing Legal and Business Risk Across the functions for the division and its CAMs and SBUs:

  • Sales: review, draft, negotiate commercial agreements and amendments, including terms and conditions, master services, delivery, cooperation, licensing, professional services, and vendor agreements. Advise on HARMAN automotive RFQ process, update templates, support resolution of commercial disputes, manage litigation, arbitration, mediation, and external counsel.
  • Prepare and conduct trainings on relevant legal topics.
  • Compliance: identify legal and regulatory issues in product initiatives and agreements, ensure data privacy and security, collaborate with compliance teams, work with trade compliance on global automotive trade issues, partner with product certification teams for regional requirements.
  • Engage strategically in risk assessment/mitigation and develop innovative approaches to legal issues supporting business objectives.
  • Engage with legal procurement and supply chain to address global supply chain issues.
  • Promptly address unforeseen legal risks and communicate to leadership.
  • Advise automotive warranty and quality teams on recall campaigns, customer disputes, claims, and settlements.
  • Support business divisions, SBUs, or functional teams in understanding, assessing, and addressing risks and influencing decisions.
  • Direct and collaborate with legal and compliance staff to develop and maintain templates, negotiation resources, and playbooks.
What You Need to Be Successful
  • Contract Review & Negotiation
    :
    Experience reviewing and negotiating complex commercial agreements, including automotive OEMs, OEM terms and conditions, purchase and supply agreements, and licensing agreements.
  • Regulatory Knowledge
    :
    Familiarity with industry certifications and regulations, including ISO 26262, NHTSA FMVSS 111, GDPR, CCPA, ISO/SAE 21434.
  • Industry Knowledge
    :
    Understanding of the automotive electronics industry, in‑cabin experience, infotainment, ADAS, and connectivity.
  • Dispute Resolution and Litigation
    :
    Experience in negotiation/mediation, managing litigation, advising leadership on resolution and escalation.
  • Contract Lifecycle Management
    :
    Managing contracts from negotiation to execution, ensuring compliance, using contract management systems, training stakeholders.
  • Juris Doctor and Bar admission (or equivalent).
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, risk awareness, initiative, project management, sound judgment.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience and a law degree.
