Job Description & How to Apply Below

Senior EV Motor Control Engineer

The Senior EV Motor Control Engineer at Broad-Ocean Technologies will be responsible for the design, development, implementation, and validation of advanced motor-control algorithms for electric vehicle (EV) propulsion and other electrified powertrain applications. The engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to develop high-performance, efficient, robust, and production-ready motor-control software for electric motors and power electronics systems. The ideal candidate has strong expertise in electric motor control, power electronics, embedded software, and model-based development, with hands-on experience developing and validating motor-control algorithms for automotive applications.

Position is on-site in Novi, Michigan
.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • 1. Develop and implement motor-control algorithms for EV traction motors and other electrified powertrain applications, including PMSM, BLDC, induction, and other advanced motor technologies.
  • 2. Design, develop, and optimize control strategies such as Field-Oriented Control (FOC), sensorless control, torque control, speed control, current regulation, maximum torque per ampere (MTPA), field weakening, and regenerative braking.
  • 3. Develop and validate motor-control algorithms using MATLAB/Simulink, simulation models, software-in-the-loop (SIL), processor-in-the-loop (PIL), and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environments.
  • 4. Implement motor-control algorithms in MATLAB/Simulink or embedded C/C++ for automotive microcontrollers and digital control platforms, with consideration for real-time performance, memory usage, execution time, and software reliability.
  • 5. Work closely with power electronics engineers to optimize the interaction between electric motors, inverters, power semiconductors, DC-link systems, and control software.
  • 6. Analyze motor and inverter performance and develop solutions to improve efficiency, torque response, NVH performance, thermal performance, stability, and overall system reliability.
  • 7. Support the development and optimization of motor-control software throughout the product lifecycle, from requirements definition and algorithm development through testing, calibration, validation, and production release.
  • 8. Troubleshoot and resolve complex motor-control, embedded software, and system-level issues using tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debuggers, data acquisition systems, and automotive calibration tools.
  • 9. Perform software and algorithm design reviews and ensure that motor-control implementations meet applicable automotive, functional, performance, quality, and software development requirements.
  • 10. Collaborate with systems, software, hardware, testing, calibration, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to ensure successful integration of motor-control systems into EV products.
  • 11. Develop technical documentation, including software requirements, control specifications, algorithm descriptions, flowcharts, state diagrams, design documentation, test plans, and validation reports.
  • 12. Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers and contribute to the development of motor-control engineering standards, methodologies, and best practices.
  • 13. Stay current with emerging technologies in EV propulsion systems, motor-control algorithms, power electronics, embedded control, automotive software, and advanced control techniques, and evaluate their potential application to future products.
  • 14. Support customer and vehicle-level engineering activities, including technical discussions, testing, troubleshooting, and product demonstrations.

Approximately 10% travel may be required.

Technical Competencies
  • 1. Strong knowledge of electric motor theory and motor-control principles.
  • 2. Hands-on experience with PMSM, BLDC, induction motors, or other traction motor technologies.
  • 3. Strong understanding of Field-Oriented Control (FOC), sensorless control, MTPA, field weakening, torque control, current control, and speed control.
  • 4. Solid understanding of inverter and power-converter topologies, PWM techniques, power semiconductors, current/position sensing, and DC-link systems.
  • 5. Strong programming skills in embedded C/C++.
  • 6. Advanced experience with MATLAB/Simulink and model-based control development.
  • 7. Experience with MCUs, real-time embedded systems, compilers, debuggers, and embedded software development environments.
