Position Summary

Each staff member shall make every effort, within the area of his/her professional expertise, to instruct students in their charge in accordance with the special education and general education curriculum and course of study adopted by the Board of Education.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrates interest and aptitude for working with youth, and evidence of good moral character.
  • Minimum of High School Diploma/GED, with completion of the ETS Para Pro Assessment or a minimum of an Associate's Degree/60 college credits.
  • Experience with students with Disabilities, Autism, or behavioral needs preferred; substitute certificate preferred.
  • Must complete the district’s onboarding process and comply with all relevant district policies and regulations and state and federal laws.
Essential Duties
  • Perform duties in accordance with the laws of New Jersey, NJ State Department of Education regulations, Nutley School District policies and rules, and the contract with the Nutley Education Association.
  • Provide services to support student learning in programs including Self-Contained, PSD, ABA, ERI, LLD, General Education, or RISE; serve students aged 3 to 21.
  • Work part-time with hours and schedules determined based on building needs and programs; not eligible for health benefits; participates in the State pension plan (PERS or DCRP depending on Tier).
General Duties and Responsibilities
  • Under the direct supervision of a certified teacher, assist with instruction and implementation of IEPs; correct (grade) student work under teacher supervision; prepare instructional materials and gather student work when absent; assist in administration of tests.
  • Implement Discrete Trial ABA programs under the direction of the teacher, CST, or Behaviorist.
  • Work with individual students with special needs and with small groups as assigned.
  • Assist with behavior management, positive behavior support, and reinforcement strategies; coordinate with speech therapists, social workers, occupational and physical therapists as needed.
  • Support students with emotional or behavioral concerns and help develop social and life skills; assist in instructional and non-instructional settings outside school sites as needed.
  • Communicate with the teacher regarding student academics and behaviors; assist with de-escalation and, where appropriate, restraints for crisis management; provide physical and verbal prompting.
  • Assist with classroom management, attend staff and professional development meetings, and maintain up-to-date pupil progress records per IEP.
  • Assist with rehearsals, field trips, drills, and district-sponsored events; operate audio-visual equipment as directed; supervise students during playground, gross motor, rest, and lunch periods.
  • Support the use of augmentative communication devices and assistive technology; participate in creating a welcoming classroom environment.
Professional and Physical Responsibilities
  • Maintain student records; assist with data collection and graphing under direction of the Teacher, CST, or BCBA; attend CST and contracted provider trainings to support IEP needs.
  • Assist in data collection tools (anecdotal notes, charts, data sheets, graphs); support physical needs including lifting, positioning, and assisting with transfers; assist with transportation loading/unloading as appropriate.
  • Support student hygiene and routine needs; assist with diapering and toilet routines for early childhood or 1:1 paraprofessionals when applicable.

Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrate integrity, good moral character, and initiative; respectfully manage students including those with developmental disabilities.
  • Knowledge of child/adolescent growth and development and appropriate classroom practices; ability to assist with instructional and non-instructional activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality; communicate clearly and concisely in written and oral form; remain calm under pressure; reinforce lesson plans and follow directions from the teacher.
