Job Summary

FHSD is seeking a dedicated Teacher of the Visually Impaired to support students with visual impairments by providing direct instruction and consultation services. The successful candidate will develop individualized educational programs, collaborate with staff and families, and ensure access to curriculum and learning resources for students ranging from early childhood to high school.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assessment:
    Evaluate students' visual abilities and functional vision to determine needs and develop appropriate accommodations and instructional strategies.
  • IEP Development:
    Collaborate with educational teams to develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 Accommodation Plans.
  • Instruction:
    Provide direct instruction in braille, assistive technology, independent living skills, orientation and mobility (in coordination with specialists), and academic subjects as needed.
  • Assistive Technology:
    Train students and staff on the use of screen readers, braille devices, magnification tools, and other assistive technology.
  • Collaboration:

    Work closely with parents, teachers, orientation and mobility specialists, and other professionals to support students' learning and independence.
  • Accessibility:
    Ensure that students have access to appropriate classroom accommodations, modifications, and learning materials in braille, large print, or digital formats.
  • Advocacy & Training:
    Educate school staff about visual impairments and their impact on learning, providing in-service training as needed.
  • Monitoring & Reporting:
    Maintain records of student progress, prepare reports, and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Education for the Visually Impaired or related field
  • Missouri Teacher Certification in Visually Impaired K-12
  • Experience working with students who are blind or visually impaired preferred
  • Proficiency in braille instruction preferred
  • Knowledge of assistive technology and accommodations for visually impaired students
  • Ability to adapt curriculum and instructional methods for students with visual impairments
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
