Job Description

Position Purpose/

Summary:

The secondary school counselor helps students overcome problems that impede learning and assists them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for personal fulfillment as mature and responsible adults.

Qualifications

A qualified candidate will hold a valid Missouri School Counselor Certificate, a master’s degree or equivalent, representing intensive coursework in the principles and practices of educational counseling, educational testing and measurement, the organization and administration of counseling services, and the psychology of learning.

Essential Duties
  • Register new students and orient them to school procedures and learning opportunities.
  • Aid students in course and subject selection.
  • Collaborate with families and staff to support students with disabilities.
  • Work to discover and develop the special abilities of students.
  • Counsel students individually or in groups to address personal problems related to attendance, family relations, health, and emotional adjustment.
  • Work with students to achieve academic success through conferences on attendance, study skills, progress reports, grades, promotion, placement, and graduation credits.
  • Prevent students from dropping out of school.
  • Work closely with special programs such as the attendance committee, Zumwalt Alternative Educational Program, special education staffing, and Individualized Education Program (IEP) conferences.
  • Acquire and disseminate occupational information to students and classes studying occupations.
  • Help students evaluate career interests and assist with pre‑employment efforts and job placement.
  • Confer with parents as needed.
  • Interpret the counseling program to the community.
  • Confer with administrators and faculty on student discipline matters.
  • Maintain student records and protect confidentiality.
  • Select, administer, and interpret standardized tests to assist students in career choices.
  • Maintain a file of catalogs, school profiles, and scholarship/financial aid information for post‑secondary training and education.
  • Provide student information to colleges and employers per board policy.
  • Make recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships.
  • Meet with representatives of vocational schools, academic colleges, and the military services to discuss programs and requirements and arrange meetings with students.
  • Serve as a liaison and make referrals to external agencies such as the Department of Social Services, courts, children’s division, psychiatrists, and counselors.
  • Conduct an annual follow‑up study on high school graduates.
Additional Duties
  • Effectively communicate verbally and in writing with administrators, staff, and the community.
  • Provide in‑service training on counseling topics for teachers and student teachers.
  • Pursue professional growth through reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and advanced coursework.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the principal.
Mental Demands

Ability to identify individual student needs, adapt instruction, read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, board policy, administrative procedures, and governmental regulations. Must maintain confidentiality, communicate clearly orally and in writing, and solve problems with strong attention to detail.

Physical Demands

Must have the ability to speak and hear in a noisy environment and read printed or handwritten material.

Work Environment

Regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active. Occasionally required to work outdoors for loading and unloading students from transportation.

Terms of Employment

Salary and work year will follow the current teacher salary schedule and the professional agreement. Days worked beyond the established calendar are payable at the employee’s regular daily rate.

Evaluation

Performance is evaluated annually per the board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
