- Develop and manage the strategic direction of non-propulsion electric motors for various automotive subsystems/applications.
- Translate strategy into actionable plans through the planning, definition, and development of deployable innovative electric motor technologies.
- Engineer technical solutions for current and future programs related to electric motors.
- Support development of long-term strategies and technology roadmaps for electric motors.
- Lead motor initiatives across multiple SMTs and partner with cross-functional organizations, including sourcing, for electric motors in various 12V subsystems.
- Advise and support cross-SMT application engineers in executing the global electric motor strategy.
- Support the generation, development, implementation, and evaluation of new electric motor feature concepts.
- Develop technical specifications for electric motors and actuators based on feature and system requirements.
- Drive commonization of motor applications by studying supplier motor portfolios and BOMs to reuse standalone motors or components across applications.
- Collaborate with Purchasing and teardown specialists to ensure internal GM motor cost estimation strategies are aligned with supplier cost strategies.
- Collaborate with the electric power organization to optimize power consumption strategies for motor applications and reduce load on charging system components.
- Participate in the resolution of field issues related to electric motors and actuators; determine root cause and recommend corrective actions.
- Provide leadership and support to product development teams as an advocate for electric motor technology integration and coordination with suppliers.
- Work with Purchasing to assess motor supplier capabilities.
- Lead motor supplier development activities, including technical reviews.
- Develop and administer technical evaluations of motor suppliers and motors across SMTs.
- Develop and maintain a preferred motor suppliers list for cross-SMT applications.
- Review Interface Control Design (ICD) strategies and templates.
- Stay current on advanced electric motor technologies (brushed and brushless) and competitive products to integrate low-cost, efficient electromechanical motors into GM systems.
- Travel to motor supplier engineering and manufacturing locations as required.
- BSEE required; MSEE with focus in Electric Machines/Drives preferred.
- 3+ years of automotive experience.
- Excellent communication and project management skills.
- Knowledge of automotive subsystems utilizing low-voltage electric motors.
- Knowledge of electromechanical design, operation, and performance characteristics of DC brushed and brushless motors for automotive applications.
- Understanding of power electronic circuitry and control techniques for DC brushed/brushless motor speed and torque control.
- Strong competence in writing and comprehending technical requirements.
- Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills to build relationships and work effectively in cross-functional teams.
- Ability to engineer and/or manage multiple complex projects and assignments with a high level of autonomy and accountability for results.
- Ability to seek and integrate knowledge from diverse sources to perform tasks effectively.
- High levels of initiative and proactivity.
- Ability to communicate ideas, plans, and results effectively through presentations and written reports.
- Proven ability to work effectively with peers, management, operations groups, and external organizations.
Demonstrates expertise in electric motor technology development and management, with a strong focus on automotive applications. Capable of leading cross-functional teams and driving innovative solutions in electric motor design and integration.
