RN Novice Nurse Program

Job Summary

The primary purpose of the role is to provide nursing services in Acute Care in accordance with federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations, following the policies and procedures directed by the CEO, Director of Physician Services, CNE and practice providers.

Martha's Vineyard Hospital offers a New Grad RN Transition Program to support and train RN's who lack Acute Care experience. Candidates begin in Acute Care nursing and have opportunities for advance training in the Operating Room, Emergency Department, Critical Care, Infusion, Dialysis and Labor and Delivery. Support comes from a team of Nurse Practice Specialist, RN Preceptor and Nurse Manager.

Program: 14‑week program with multiple start dates. Candidates are hired as temporary employees with competitive pay and differentials for evening, nights and weekend commitments. Weeks 1‑14 include day/night rotation, patient observation, preceptorship on unit floors and classroom training.

• Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing
• Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts
• Current BLS certification
• Demonstrates ability to care for patients across age groups, from pediatrics to geriatrics
• Ability to care for surgical patients, medical patients and short‑term psychiatric patients
• Working knowledge and safe use of medications specific to the acute care population
• Ability to evaluate age‑appropriate behavior, motor skills, physiological norms and modify care approaches accordingly
• Interview and communication techniques appropriate for age groups
• Completed annual nursing competencies and attended annual mandatory day
• Performs other duties as assigned; complies with all policies and standards

Associate's Degree in Nursing required;
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.
