The Oak Brook Public Library is seeking candidates for a part‑time Circulation Clerk. Please carefully review the information below and required hours/work schedule before applying.

Job Summary

The circulation clerk position is a public-facing customer service oriented role. Ideal applicants should be confident in their communication and customer service skills to serve a diverse population.
Past public-facing customer service experience in or out of libraries is strongly preferred.
Confidence in learning new computer software (library-based ILS) is necessary.
Schedule flexibility is a plus.

Job Functions
  • Answering and directing general questions from the public in person and via phone
  • Checking in and checking out books and other library materials
  • Issuing new library cards and confirming incorporated residents
  • Maintaining and updating library card accounts
  • Sorting and shelving books and library materials
  • Delivering curbside pickup orders
  • Take payment for fees for lost and damaged materials
  • Perform searches and shelf checks for materials
  • Inspect incoming library materials for damage
  • Perform opening and closing procedures
Work Schedule
  • Approximately 18 hours / week, no more than 1,000 hours / year
  • This clerk position consists of two night shifts per week (from approximately 2:00pm until closing at 9:00pm). Exact combination of two days between Monday and Thursday is flexible.
  • Every other weekend including Saturdays from 9:00am to 5:00pm and Sundays from 12:30pm to 5:00pm.
  • The Sunday shift is suspended during the summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day when the library is closed on Sundays.

Qualifications
  • 18 years of age
  • Operate various types of office equipment
  • Accurately file and sort numerically and alphabetically
  • Read and comprehend English, communicate verbally and digitally with library patrons
  • Operate a computer/file directory, Windows 11, Microsoft Office suite software, Google Workspace, et al.
  • Wide flexibility of movement is required including standing for extended periods of time, bending, lifting, and pushing a full book cart
Selection

Candidate screening process may consist of interviews, reference checks, a computer aptitude evaluation, a book shelving test, and other verifications. Chosen candidates will be subject to a background and criminal history investigation and qualifying pre-employment medical examination and drug screen. This is a non-IMRF (pension) position with limited benefit earning potential.(Updated 13 July 2026)

$17.30 per hour DOE, annual merit and COL increase up to 4.5%
