Role

The Section Engineer provides technical leadership in the planning, design, and execution of projects involving Exelon's utility infrastructure including electric or gas distribution, transmission, substations, and related systems. This role involves mentoring junior engineers and includes strategic planning, leading complex engineering studies, and ensuring engineering excellence across projects and operations within the section. The engineer champions cross‑functional collaboration and continuous improvement across engineering operations.

  • Directing engineering studies and contributing to performance evaluations across the section or segment of responsibility.
  • Setting priorities for safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Approving budgets, work packages, and technical specifications.
  • Leading cross‑functional coordination and external partnerships.
  • Supervising field activities and ensuring resolution of complex issues; may be required to work extended hours for coverage during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.
Primary Duties
  • Leads highly technical consultation and training through OJT/OJE (may include some classroom instruction) on highly complex and unique technical areas requiring the application of advanced engineering principles and may require advanced knowledge of complex analog and digital field test equipment; (25%).
  • Leads the work activities of project teams and others on the implementation of large specialized technical projects and/or programs to develop studies, proposals, and commissioning plans to support safely energizing and placing major utility and customer systems on the system; (25%).
  • Performs assignments while acting independently and may lead multi‑discipline teams, possibly providing direct oversight of contractors (15%).
  • Participates in department/project management planning and monitors performance to accomplish committed results (10%).
  • Provides detailed technical training, mentorship, peer review, and/or guidance to others (10%).
  • May participate in technical and industry societies and committees to enhance knowledge of new technologies or issues in areas of company interest; serves as an expert in a specialized area (5%).
  • Acts as an expert witness and provides expert opinions for internal committees or as required (5%).
Job Scope
  • Highly influential on strategic management decisions that can have a major impact on the company.
  • Supports or leads employees and/or contractors in executing plans to initially energize utility or customer equipment/systems and place them on the system.
  • Sets direction for the organization regarding technical issues.
  • Applies technical knowledge to help promote a safe work environment and enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Provides technical support for Transmission & Substation (T&S) Engineering departments (Protection and Control, Substation, and Transmission Engineers).
  • Creates and implements T&S engineer development strategies and programs.
  • Develops and instructs technical training modules.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering discipline with at least 7 years of professional engineering experience.
  • Completed assignments and projects demonstrating:
    • Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems.
    • Knowledge and ability to apply problem solving approaches and engineering theory.
    • Knowledge of engineering designs, principles, and practices.
    • Advanced knowledge and experience with regulations, guides, standards, codes, methods, practices, and advanced engineering principles.
    • Advanced knowledge of latest technologies necessary to perform a variety of specialized unique or complex assignments for various installation types of services.
  • * Note:

    There are a limited number of personnel in the industry with the required knowledge, ability, and experience. Master’s degree in Engineering reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year. PE License reduces the OJT experience requirement by 1 year. Items (1) and (3) are mutually inclusive, whereby the maximum experience requirement reduction is one year.
