Department of Public Works Mechanic (Full-Time)The Village of Oak Brook is seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanic to join our Public Works Vehicle Maintenance Division. This role performs maintenance, diagnostics, and repair work on a wide range of Village vehicles and equipment. The ideal candidate is coachable, a strong communicator, and thrives in a team-focused environment.
Schedule:
Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m with participation in after-hours work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform mechanical repairs including brakes, suspension, steering, electrical systems, diagnostics, and routine services.
- Weld and fabricate parts using stick and MIG welding; design and build custom components.
- Conduct field repairs and coordinate equipment transport.
- Maintain shop tools, facilities, and equipment.
- Operate specialized vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Use computerized diagnostic tools for troubleshooting.
- Assist other departments during emergencies, including water main breaks.
- Participate in snow and ice operations (plowing, salting).
- Respond to call-outs on a 24-hour basis as required.
- Follow all safety policies and maintain exceptional customer service.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1–3 years of experience as an automotive mechanic or equivalent training.
- Ability to obtain 3 ASE certifications within the first year; annual recertification required.
- Strong knowledge of drive trains, HVAC, electrical systems, diesel engines, small engines, emergency vehicle systems, and snow removal equipment.
- Ability to use diagnostic equipment and maintain accurate records in asset management software.
- Illinois CDL Class A or ability to obtain within 180 days
- Excellent driving record
- Ability to perform physical labor in inclement weather
- Municipal or public works experience preferred
Salary: $71,506.08 annually
