Department of Public Works Mechanic (Full-Time)

The Village of Oak Brook is seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanic to join our Public Works Vehicle Maintenance Division. This role performs maintenance, diagnostics, and repair work on a wide range of Village vehicles and equipment. The ideal candidate is coachable, a strong communicator, and thrives in a team-focused environment.

Schedule:

Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m with participation in after-hours work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform mechanical repairs including brakes, suspension, steering, electrical systems, diagnostics, and routine services.
  • Weld and fabricate parts using stick and MIG welding; design and build custom components.
  • Conduct field repairs and coordinate equipment transport.
  • Maintain shop tools, facilities, and equipment.
  • Operate specialized vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Use computerized diagnostic tools for troubleshooting.
  • Assist other departments during emergencies, including water main breaks.
  • Participate in snow and ice operations (plowing, salting).
  • Respond to call-outs on a 24-hour basis as required.
  • Follow all safety policies and maintain exceptional customer service.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1–3 years of experience as an automotive mechanic or equivalent training.
  • Ability to obtain 3 ASE certifications within the first year; annual recertification required.
  • Strong knowledge of drive trains, HVAC, electrical systems, diesel engines, small engines, emergency vehicle systems, and snow removal equipment.
  • Ability to use diagnostic equipment and maintain accurate records in asset management software.
  • Illinois CDL Class A or ability to obtain within 180 days
  • Excellent driving record
  • Ability to perform physical labor in inclement weather
  • Municipal or public works experience preferred

Salary: $71,506.08 annually
