The Mechanically Trained Operator (MTO) plays a key role in keeping production running smoothly and efficiently. This position combines equipment operation with mechanical aptitude to ensure minimal downtime, maximum productivity, and consistent product quality. The MTO operates, monitors, and performs minor maintenance on high-speed packaging equipment while supporting continuous improvement and safety initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and monitor high-speed production and packaging equipment to meet daily targets.
  • Assist with equipment setups, changeovers, and adjustments to reduce downtime.
  • Perform minor mechanical tasks such as clearing jams, tightening fasteners, or replacing belts and seals.
Mechanical Support & Maintenance
  • Troubleshoot and resolve minor mechanical issues, escalating major repairs to the maintenance team.
  • Conduct routine inspections, lubrication, and cleaning to maintain peak performance.
  • Provide feedback on equipment performance and recommend process improvements.
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow OSHA, GMP, SQF, HACCP, and company safety standards at all times.
  • Report hazards and actively participate in safety initiatives.
Documentation & Reporting
  • Accurately log downtime, maintenance activities, and production data.
  • Track material usage and waste to support operational efficiency.
  • Participate in Kaizen events, problem-solving activities, and process improvement projects.
  • Support a “Zero Loss Mindset” by identifying inefficiencies and cost-saving opportunities.
Qualifications
  • Experience: 1–2 years in a manufacturing environment (high-speed packaging preferred).
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; technical or mechanical training a plus.
  • Skills:
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical systems (gears, bearings, sprockets).
  • Proficiency with hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, calipers, measuring tools).
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Familiarity with CMMS systems and production reporting tools is a plus.
  • Language: English required; bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
Working Conditions
  • 9-hour shifts (2nd shift), including some weekends.
  • Combination of plant floor and occasional office work.
  • Regularly lift/move up to 25 lbs; occasionally up to 50 lbs.
  • Exposure to heat, cold, noise, oils, dust, and production equipment.
