Boring Bar Machinist (Large Capacity / Heavy Plate)
Wage: $30.00-$40.00 per hour.
Shift: 1st,
Hours:
6:30am-2:30pm. 1st shift position located in Oak Creek, WI. QPS Employment Group is seeking an experienced Boring Bar Machinist to set up and operate large‑capacity boring equipment for machining heavy plate and fabricated components. This role is critical to maintaining the company’s high standards of precision, quality, and turnaround in a full‑service fabrication environment. This is a 1st shift position with the opportunity for hire.
- Set up and operate large horizontal boring mills / boring bars (e.g., Fermat or similar).
- Machine large, heavy plate weldments and fabricated components.
- Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T specifications.
- Perform precision boring, drilling, milling, and finishing operations.
- Align and secure large work pieces using overhead cranes and rigging.
- Monitor machining processes and make adjustments to maintain tolerances.
- Inspect finished parts using precision measuring tools (micrometers, bore gauges, etc.).
- Maintain equipment and ensure proper tooling selection and setup.
- Work closely with fabrication, welding, and quality teams to meet project requirements.
- Follow all safety procedures in a heavy industrial environment.
- 3+ years of experience operating boring mills / boring bars (large capacity preferred).
- Experience machining large weldments or heavy plate steel.
- Strong understanding of machining practices, feeds, speeds, and tooling.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and GD&T.
- Experience with tight tolerance machining on large components.
- Familiarity with overhead crane operation and rigging (preferred).
- Basic CNC knowledge or manual machining experience (depending on equipment).
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Experience with Fermat boring mills or similar large machines preferred.
- CMM or advanced inspection experience preferred.
- Background in fabrication shops or job‑shop environments preferred.
- Welding or fabrication knowledge preferred.
- Ability to lift, rig, and maneuver heavy materials with assistance.
- Standing for extended periods.
- Working in a manufacturing environment with noise, heat, and heavy equipment.
