S&T Product Development Chemist I, Experienced
PPG Industries, Inc. is seeking a Product Development Chemist I (Experienced) in Oak Creek, WI. The role focuses on developing new liquid coatings products and testing coatings against multiple specifications and customer requirements for industrial coatings.
Responsibilities- Work with customers to understand their needs and incorporate those needs into new liquid coatings products.
- Lead experimental chemistry projects, collaborating with contractors and chemistry technicians.
- Coordinate project activities across Manufacturing, QA, Technical Service, and Commercial teams.
- Analyze and interpret experimental chemistry results to contribute to the development of new and improved liquid coatings products.
- Troubleshoot and correct problematic batches and resolve technical issues reported by customers.
- Reformulate existing chemistry‑based industrial coatings products to meet cost reduction or property enhancement goals.
- Associate’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Chemistry.
- At least five years of coatings formulation experience.
- Experience acting as a liaison between scientific, quality, process engineering, manufacturing, corporate, customer, and supply‑chain communities.
- Familiarity with ISO standards or other organizational standard test methods, including reading comprehension and testing in accordance with the standards.
- Ability to read, perform, and write standard operating procedures and update them with subject‑matter experts.
- Experience in development steps of a new product/process: conceptualization, scale‑ups, performance testing, and verifying feedback loops post‑implementation.
- Knowledge of analytical test methods and how to obtain useful data in a defective product/process situation.
- Understanding of particle stability principles, DMAIC methodology, and JMP/Minitab or equivalent statistical tools.
- Knowledge of laboratory recordkeeping standards, including laboratory notebooks, SOPs, and product validation.
- Basic troubleshooting of machine malfunctions and ability to replace or change parts for mixers, spray equipment, and test equipment.
- Availability to work outside normally scheduled hours to support manufacturing facilities and customer accounts.
