Position Summary

The QA/QC Manager is responsible for planning, implementing, and managing all Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) activities for Grunau’s HVAC scope on a large project. This position ensures that all mechanical systems are installed in accordance with contract documents, engineering requirements, manufacturer recommendations, customer quality standards, applicable codes, and Grunau’s quality expectations.

The QA/QC Manager serves as the project’s quality leader by working proactively with engineering, BIM, fabrication, project management, field supervision, commissioning teams, and trade partners to prevent deficiencies before installation. The goal is to deliver a “first-time quality” project that minimizes rework, supports successful commissioning, and exceeds client expectations.

Primary Responsibilities

Quality Leadership

  • Lead all QA/QC activities for Grunau’s HVAC scope on the customer project.
  • Develop and implement the Project Quality Management Plan.
  • Establish project-specific quality standards and inspection procedures.
  • Promote a culture of “Build It Right the First Time.”
  • Serve as the primary quality liaison between Grunau, General Contractor, Customer, commissioning agents, and design professionals.

Quality Assurance (Planning & Prevention)

  • Review contract documents, specifications, drawings, and owner requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews and constructability reviews.
  • Coordinate with engineering to resolve design conflicts before construction.
  • Verify shop drawings and submittals comply with project requirements.
  • Develop Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) for all major scopes of work.
  • Ensure quality requirements are incorporated into preconstruction planning.

Quality Control (Field Verification)

Perform inspections of:

  • Above ground piping
  • Supports
  • Welding and brazing
  • Pressure testing
  • Hydronic systems
  • HVAC controls installation
  • Mechanical room installation
  • Equipment startup readiness
  • System labeling and identification
  • Final finishes and workmanship

Ensure all installations comply with:

  • Approved shop drawings
  • Manufacturer installation requirements
  • Applicable codes
  • Customer quality standards

Inspection & Testing

  • Develop and maintain inspection schedules.
  • Coordinate hold points and witness inspections.
  • Verify completion of required testing.
  • Review pressure test documentation.
  • Verify systems are complete prior to owner inspections.
  • Maintain project punch lists.
  • Assign corrective actions.

    Verify completion of corrective work.
  • Ensure deficiencies are closed before project milestones.
  • Identify recurring issues and implement preventive measures.

Documentation Management

Maintain complete quality documentation including:

  • Inspection reports
  • Quality audits
  • NCR (Non-Conformance Reports)
  • Corrective Action Reports
  • Test reports
  • Equipment startup documentation
  • As-built verification records

Coordination

Work closely with:

  • BIM/VDC
  • Fabrication
  • Project Management
  • Foremen
  • Safety Department
  • TAB Contractors
  • General Contractor
  • Customer Quality Team

Prefabrication Quality

  • Review prefabricated assemblies before shipment.
  • Verify fabrication complies with approved drawings.
  • Inspect weld quality and dimensional accuracy.
  • Ensure labeling and identification meet project standards.
  • Coordinate fabrication improvements with shop leadership.
  • Coordinate with commissioning agents.
  • Verify systems are complete prior to startup.
  • Confirm equipment is installed per manufacturer requirements.
  • Support functional performance testing.
  • Resolve quality issues identified during commissioning.
  • Assist with owner demonstrations and turnover.
  • Analyze quality trends.
  • Develop lessons learned throughout the project.
  • Recommend improvements to installation methods.
  • Improve inspection procedures.

The QA/QC Manager is expected to:

  • Lead by example.
  • Promote accountability without creating an adversarial environment.
  • Build collaborative relationships with field personnel.
  • Be highly visible in the field.
  • Coach teams on quality expectations.
  • Encourage proactive problem-solving.
  • Maintain professionalism with owners, inspectors, and trade partners.
