Job Details

A well-established healthcare organization is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to lead all aspects of payroll operations. This individual will oversee payroll processing, ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, maintain strong internal controls, and serve as the primary administrator for the organization's payroll system. This is a highly visible leadership role that partners closely with Human Resources, Finance, and IT to support accurate payroll administration and continuous process improvement.

Key Responsibilities
Manage end-to-end payroll operations, ensuring accurate and timely processing for all employees.
Process and review payroll transactions including regular wages, overtime, shift differentials, stipends, and other compensation.
Prepare payroll tax filings and ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local payroll regulations.
Reconcile payroll activity to the general ledger and maintain accurate payroll records.
Serve as the primary administrator and subject matter expert for the payroll system (UKG experience highly preferred).
Partner with IT to support payroll system upgrades, testing, troubleshooting, and data integrity.
Supervise, mentor, and develop payroll team members, including hiring, training, performance management, and workload distribution.
Partner with Human Resources to ensure accurate employee data, benefit deductions, and payroll integrations.
Audit benefit file integrations and resolve discrepancies related to payroll and HRIS data.
Oversee payroll deductions and reconciliation for employer-sponsored benefit programs, including HSA, FSA, disability, life insurance, and other benefit plans.
Ensure compliance with applicable state reporting requirements and payroll-related regulatory filings.
Establish and maintain payroll controls, policies, and procedures that support compliance and operational efficiency.
Manage retroactive payroll adjustments and ensure accurate correction processing.
Interpret and apply collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) as they relate to payroll administration.
Serve as backup for payroll processing to ensure business continuity.
Prepare reports and documentation to support internal and external audits.
Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, reporting, controls, and system functionality.
Coordinate year-end payroll activities, including W-2 processing, system updates, and annual payroll maintenance.

Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Experience
5+ years of progressive payroll experience, including payroll processing and payroll accounting.
Experience working in a union environment.
Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
Healthcare payroll experience is a plus.

Experience with UKG or a comparable enterprise payroll system is strongly preferred.

Desired Skills
Strong knowledge of payroll accounting, tax regulations, compliance, and internal controls.
Experience managing complex payrolls with multiple pay components and benefit deductions.
Proficiency with payroll systems, Microsoft Excel, and financial reporting.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and reconciliation skills.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Effective communication skills with the ability to collaborate across HR, Finance, IT, and leadership.
Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
Experience interpreting employment policies, payroll regulations, and collective bargaining agreements.
