VETERAN CREDIT RCW 41.04.010 provides for a veterans scoring criteria status to be added to the passing grade of certain veterans after all testing. If eligible, upload and submit your DD-214 with your application to determine eligibility.
About Our DepartmentThe Oak Harbor Police Department is an accredited agency comprised of Administration, Patrol, Detectives and Special Operations. The department is known for its community involvement and problem-solving approach to law enforcement. The department includes a city jail staffed by City Correctional staff and City Police Support Officers. The department emphasizes training, including an internal bi-monthly program, inter-agency training, and external opportunities.
The department participates in Community Advisory Board, Reserve Officer Unit, Explorer Post and Citizens Volunteers, and maintains cooperative relationships with local agencies and regional task forces. We work with the U.S. Navy and Whidbey Island Naval Air Station and contribute to events such as the 4th of July, National Night Out, Oak Harbor Music Festival and the Whidbey Island Marathon.
Officers work on a squad with a 3/12 schedule, rotating two months on days and two months on nights. Detectives work a 4/10 schedule.

Job SummaryUnder general supervision, Police Officers perform police services in accordance with the mission, goals, and objectives of the Oak Harbor Police Department, and in compliance with governing federal, state, and local laws. Officers safeguard the public peace, protect life and property, prevent crime, enforce the law, protect the rights of all persons and uphold the community standards.
Essential Job FunctionsWork activities involve multiple skills and may include the following depending on assignment, crew needs, emergency services, special projects, and seasonal factors:
- Respond to calls for service involving criminal activity and community caretaking; interview persons with complaints and direct them to proper authorities/community resources.
- Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations, process crime scenes, gather evidence, obtain statements, apprehend suspects, make arrests and transport offenders.
- Provide information to inquiries from the public.
- Practice efficient case management: initial documentation, timely follow-up, cooperation with other agencies, and testify in court as needed.
- patrol the City by car, bicycle or on foot to prevent crime, enforce laws, direct traffic, and operate motor vehicles safely.
- Exercise proper safety precautions including de-escalation and crisis management skills.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with City officials, departments, businesses and the public; respond with good judgment, tact and courtesy in stressful situations.
- Interact with other agencies on civil and criminal matters, including emergencies.
- Present a professional demeanor with the public.
- Operate police vehicles in all conditions and maintain equipment.
- Read and apply department policies, rules, regulations, instructions, laws and ordinances.
- Enter or retrieve computer data.
