To promote school bus safety through a comprehensive vehicle inspection program. To conduct inspections on school buses. Inspectors are required to identify vehicle violations and take appropriate action pursuant to established criteria.

The Michigan State Police (MSP) is a full‑service policing agency with statewide jurisdiction, providing over 60 different services either directly to Michigan residents or in support of other law enforcement agencies. The MSP personnel most visible to the public are the uniform troopers whose primary responsibilities include traffic enforcement, crime prevention and investigation, and community engagement and service.

Education

Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.

Experience
  • Vehicle Safety Inspector 9 – Two years of experience in the repair and/or maintenance of motor vehicles.
  • Vehicle Safety Inspector E10 – Three years of experience in the repair and/or maintenance of motor vehicles or one year of experience equivalent to a Vehicle Safety Inspector 9.
  • Completion of a mechanical vocational program may be substituted for one year of motor vehicle repair and maintenance experience.
  • Vehicle Safety Inspector E10 – Two years of experience in the inspection of motor vehicles may be substituted for the experience requirement.

This position requires passing a pre‑employment screening, including passing a drug screen, criminal history background check, and a fingerprint check by the Michigan State Police.
