We are seeking a Control Center Assistant who will focus on operating telephone, radio, or other communications to receive and communicate emergency and non-emergency assistance requests. This position resides in the Facilities and Operations Directorate, Laboratory Protection Division, Laboratory Shift Superintendent (LSS) Department at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our team, you will work in an 8-hour and/or 12-hour rotating shift assignment under minimal supervision, performing the following duties in the Laboratory Emergency Response Center.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:- Operate a multi-line telephone system to answer emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
- Operate and monitor multiple alarm systems (facility safety, fire, radiation, utility).
- Operate and communicate through multiple radio transmitters and receivers.
- Calm, negotiate, advise, and otherwise communicate with callers to obtain necessary and accurate information.
- Simultaneously process information without sacrificing speed and accuracy.
- Determine appropriate nature of calls and dispatch appropriate resources necessary for mitigation.
- Monitor location, status, and needs of responders by use of radio, telephone, computer, logs, and other means.
- Simultaneously using multiple monitors and systems associated with LERC operations.
- Provide emergency medical assistance to the public by telephone.
- Update and dispatch information as it is received; retrieving necessary information through computer resources.
- Use systems and equipment to make on-site and off-site emergency notifications, initiating protective actions, and conveying other announcements as needed/directed.
- Perform limited Visitor Service duties (issuing badges and assisting with site access).
- Maintain required forms and logs.

- AA/AS and/or certifications in Public Safety Telecommunicator, Fire Service Communicator, and Emergency Medical Dispatcher.
- Must have a minimum of five years of customer service and/or call center experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have a valid Tennessee Driver’s license.
- Experience as a dispatcher or telecommunicator with a public safety or emergency medical agency is desired.
- Highly organized and able to prioritize and schedule multiple activities.
- Ability to effectively communicate with senior management and a wide variety and level of staff.
- Ability to effectively communicate and interface with Federal, State, and Local government agencies.
- Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
