Salary Range: $120,000 to $160,000 (Level III – V or Team Lead)

Job Description

The Facility & Utility Design Engineer provides design engineering support to the fuel production facility, from research and development to system design, installation, testing, and maintenance. The role contributes to the design, assembly, testing, and maintenance of mechanical and process equipment, furthering the design and licensing of the Facility.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, chemical, or nuclear engineering from a program accredited by the ABET EAC is required. ETAC-accredited Engineering Technology programs will not be considered for this position. A master’s degree in engineering or related field (may include a combination of experience obtained through an academic institution, e.g., design projects, research, or design teams, as well as professional experience) may be in lieu of two years of experience.
  • Typically, 5 years' experience for a Level III, 10 years for a Level IV, and 15 years for a Level V.
  • CAD and P& are required.
  • Experience with facility design, construction, and operation is required.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and/or chemical engineering concepts, including design, manufacture, installation, assembly, and operation of equipment and systems which meet all manufacturing process and safety standards.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing facility design, including lean manufacturing approaches.
  • Extensive knowledge of applicable codes and standards pertinent to mechanical and/or process designs.
  • Knowledge of 2D/3D engineering and manufacturing tools, e.g. ProE.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, Carrier HAP, Trace TRACE, or similar design and simulation software.
Job Profile Tasks/Responsibilities
  • Create designs for various process support systems (chemical, piping, HVAC, ventilation, structural, electro-mechanical, automation and robotics). Including load calculations, system sizing, equipment selection, and layout of ductwork, piping, and facility ventilation.
  • Contribute to a group of process engineers and facility engineers that are responsible for design, fabrication, installation, and operational support of multiple facility systems including but not limited to HVAC, process exhaust, HEPA filtration, chilled water loop, process water, process chemical supply, process gas supply, dust collection.
  • Support the process, facility design, and fuel development teams.
  • Create and document engineering designs [requirements, specifications, mechanical drawings, process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), engineering calculations, etc.].
  • Conduct energy modeling, simulations, and engineering calculations to enhance efficiency and sustainability, ensuring all designs meet regulatory and safety standards.
  • Coordinate with design teams to ensure seamless integration of HVAC and other mechanical systems into the overall building design and support the development of fuel manufacturing processes.
  • Work with contractors to clarify design intent, resolve technical issues, and provide solutions to site challenges.
  • Select and order parts for process systems (motors, drives, sensors, pumps, valves, etc.).
  • Assemble parts to build prototype designs.
  • Operate process equipment to perform design verification and validation and conduct quality assurance checks and site inspections to verify work compliance, addressing any deviations or deficiencies.
  • Perform design engineering activities to support fuel manufacturing (reliability, maintenance, process improvement, failure analysis, cost estimation, etc.).
  • Develop standard operating procedures.
  • Develop maintenance plans for process equipment and support systems.
  • Participate in teams to develop standardized engineering workflows and documentation.
  • Maintain professional demeanor and behavior at all times in all forms of communication.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to more junior team members with the execution of the core tasks and responsibilities listed in the Job Profile Task/Responsibilities section of this document.
  • Lead small groups of engineers to solve complex technical problems and deliver high quality engineering work products on time and within budget.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
