Overview
The Nuclear Measurements and Analytical Services (NMAS) Group within the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking an In Vivo Staff Member to support the Nuclear and Radiological Measurements (NRM) team in the operation of the ORNL In Vivo Laboratory. ORNL's internal dosimetry program is accredited by the Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP) for personnel dosimetry, with NRM providing whole body, lung, and wound counting services to radiological workers at ORNL and other Department of Energy prime contractors in the Oak Ridge, Tennessee area.
ORNL is the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting both basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to critical challenges in energy and national security. The Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division partners with research and operations staff to enable the Laboratory's scientific mission while protecting personnel from nuclear and radiological hazards and ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
Main Duties / Responsibilities- Support the day-to-day operation of the whole-body counting, lung counting, and wound counting capabilities, facilities, instrumentation, and metrics.
- Review in vivo measurement results, calculations, logs, and QC data.
- Support DOELAP accreditation activities for the in vivo counting laboratory.
- Perform system calibrations, validations, and verifications under the direction of the NRM Manager.
- Maintain equipment and assist in troubleshooting instrumentation issues.
- Assist in the development, updating, and reviewing procedures, reports, and other technical documentation to support of the In vivo Laboratory.
- Interface with other ORNL Internal Dosimetry Program technical staff, auditors, customers, vendors, and suppliers, as required.
- Participate in audits, inspections, verifications, and surveillances.
- Support other activities in the Nuclear Measurements and Analytical Services Group, as needed.

- BS degree in health physics, radiochemistry, nuclear engineering, radiation protection or related technical field with 2 years of relevant experience, or a MS degree with 1 year of relevant experience.
- Prior experience with gamma spectroscopy and other nuclear instrumentation.
- Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver field spectroscopy equipment. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
- Experience with Mirion's Genie2K software.
- Knowledge of Mirion's APEX In-vivo and Abacos2K software applications.
- Experience with troubleshooting HPGe detectors and/or other nuclear instrumentation.
- Ability to collaborate with other staff to address novel and complex technical issues.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Excellent organization, communication, writing, and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to interface with technical staff, auditors, regulators, and customers from varied disciplines and backgrounds.
