Description
The Staff Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist will develop, update, analyze, and manage GIS data for a wide variety of professional services. This position will conduct GIS analysis, GIS data development, GIS data maintenance, and data preparation for use in public safety GIS systems, regularly communicating project status to customers. The role emphasizes teamwork, customer commitment, a sense of urgency, and continuous improvement.
WhatYou Will Do
- Analyze GIS data and mapping for the Engineering and Surveying departments while supporting both internal and external project teams.
- Produce technical specifications, project approaches, cost estimates, and schedules.
- Develop and review GIS mapping and data collection tasks.
- Utilize various software packages and information from multiple sources (MS Access databases, MS Excel spreadsheets, deeds, field notes, etc.) to create GIS maps supporting field personnel and deliverables.
- Perform digital feature extraction from multiple data sources.
- Execute projections and transformations for project deliverables.
- Support GIS system needs and requirements, implementing improved work methods.
- Create and update new and existing GIS maps and map layers, and edit GPS data using ArcGIS to support field surveys.
- Collect GPS data and perform post‑processing for high‑accuracy specifications.
- Support GIS metadata creation.
- Design extensions and add‑ins for GIS applications such as ESRI ArcGIS Explorer for in‑house use.
- Perform land survey records search and ownership data research from various sources.
- Support georeferenced raster and vector data.
- All other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, geography, environmental science, or a closely related field and 3 years of related professional experience (or)
- Associate Degree and 5 years of related professional experience (or)
- High School Diploma/GED and 8 years of related professional experience.
- Experience working in Arc Pro and AGOL required.
- Basic GIS skills, including data analysis abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including the Microsoft Office suite.
- Prior GPS and applicable natural science field experience a plus.
- GIS certification from an accredited university preferred.
- GISP certification preferred.
- Experience using ETL tools or building data pipelines—for example FME, Fulcrum, etc. preferred.
- Strong knowledge in data analytics/Power BI and dashboarding preferred.
