Job Summary
Responsible for technical functions in support of engineering activities such as design, test, checkout, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electro-mechanical systems, experimental design circuitry or specialized test equipment. Applications may include analog, digital, and/or video circuits and logic systems. Will apply principles and theories of electronics, electrical circuitry, engineering mathematics, electronic and electrical testing, and physics, as applicable. Conducts engineering tests and detailed experimental testing to collect design data or assist in research work.
Performs operational test and fault isolation on systems and equipment. Assists in determining methods or actions to remedy malfunctions. Assists in the design, construction, test and check-out of test equipment. Utilize manufacturing test, development or diagnostic equipment such as oscilloscopes, VOD, DVM, signal generators and specialized test apparatus.
- Discusses layout and assembly procedures and problems with Engineers or management and draws sketches to clarify design details and functional criteria of electronic units.
- Recommends changes in circuitry or installation specifications to simplify assembly and maintenance.
- Works from schematics, diagrams, written and verbal descriptions, layouts or defined plans to perform testing, checkout and trouble‑shooting functions.
- Sets up standard test apparatus or devises to conduct functional, operational, environmental, and life tests to evaluate performance and reliability of prototype or production model.
- Analyzes and interprets test data.
- Adjusts, calibrates, aligns, and modifies circuitry and components and records effects on unit performance.
- May write technical reports and develop charts, graphs, and schematics to describe and illustrate system's operating characteristics, malfunctions, deviations from design specifications, and functional limitations.
- Checks functioning of newly installed equipment to evaluate system performance under actual operating conditions.
- Read blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, or engineering instructions for assembling electronics units, applying knowledge of electronic theory and components.
- Perform preventative maintenance or calibration of equipment or systems.
- Adjust or replace defective or improperly functioning circuitry or electronics components, using hand tools or soldering iron.
- Identify and resolve equipment malfunctions, working with external and/or internal sources as necessary to procure replacement parts.
- May maintain system logs or manuals to document testing or operation of equipment.
- Provide user applications or engineering support or recommendations for new or existing equipment with regard to installation, upgrades, or enhancements.
- Provide customer support and education, working with users to identify needs, determine sources of problems, or to provide information on product use.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities, however it may lead, guide and assign basic tasks to entry and intermediate level employees within the department.
