Structural Engineer, Level V Security Clearance

Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS) is actively seeking engineering, professional, technical, and administrative personnel to support the Department of Energy at the Y‑12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and at the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas. Successful candidates will be employees of AIS and will report to Y‑12 staff for day‑to‑day direction and assignments. Pay, benefits, and HR functions are provided by AIS.

Qualified applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old, and able to meet DOE pre‑employment requirements including physicals, drug screening, and background investigation.

• Develop high‑quality detailed design packages; provide engineering procurement and field technical support to implement designs; troubleshoot and assess technical issues of plant facilities.
• Prepare conceptual engineering deliverables, such as cost‑estimating bills of material, man‑hour estimates, statements of work, design criteria, and engineering deliverables.
• Collaborate effectively within an integrated project team or act as a technical lead for a multi‑discipline task, providing input to system engineers and plant customers.
• Conduct walk‑downs of existing plant facilities to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.
• Provide self‑performed technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using established engineering practices, codes, and standards (e.g., building evaluations and modifications, seismic analyses and rehab, oversight of outside engineering firms, steel and concrete design, machine installations).

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET‑accredited school with at least 20 years of experience (emphasis on structural engineering), or a Master’s/MA with 19 years of structural engineering experience.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to interface effectively with clients, production and support organizations, management, and hourly‑wage employees.
• Technical expertise and application of structural engineering principles, theories, and concepts.
• Proficiency in developing structural drawings (plans, sections and details) for steel, concrete, and cold‑formed steel; structural calculations; equipment anchorage; report preparation; drafting (or oversight of drafting); and preparation of construction specifications.
• Familiarity with consensus design codes and ability to plan, self‑perform, and direct all engineering design team activities on a project, including scope development, design timelines, functional requirements, design basis and criteria, scheduled and tracking, budgeting, calculations, drawing generation, research, design review, inter‑discipline coordination, approvals, change control, and field verification of construction compliance.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance is required. Q clearance is preferred.
• Active professional engineering (PE) license preferred.
• CAD drafting experience and 3D modeling experience (e.g., STAAD.Pro) preferred.

• Pre‑employment drug screening required; external applicants must complete a post‑offer pre‑employment drug test.
• Medical examinations may be required.
• Position requires DOE clearance; may be designated for Workplace Substance Abuse Prevention (WSAP) tests with an ongoing random drug testing program.
