What You'll Do

First level manager providing leadership, technical direction and oversight to Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) engineers, technical support personnel, and potentially subcontract employees. Responsible for maintaining safe working conditions and safety awareness, establishing goals, expectations, and priorities and integrating work within the supervised organization. Monitors department workload to ensure staff is cognizant of cost, schedule, and technical commitments. Advises management of staffing needs necessary to address both forecast and emerging workload.

Develops, reviews, and/or approves budgets, proposals, cost estimates, schedules, and related documents required to meet customer needs. Frequent contact with external and internal customers is required.

Provides technical capabilities in NCS to ensure fissile materials are processed, stored, transferred, and handled safely so that personnel and property are protected against a criticality accident. Approves Criticality Safety Analysis of equipment, processes, and procedures prescribing correct methods, control requirements, and limitations. Performs or participates in surveillance, inspections, walkthroughs, appraisals, or audits of fissile material operations to ensure compliance with Nuclear Criticality Safety Approvals, Nuclear Safety rules, including Safety Analysis Reports, Safety Assessments, Safety Reviews, and risk assessments/analyses.

Provides operating areas with specific NCS professional interpretations and advice. Provides training to employees in basic criticality safety. Validates, maintains, and operates nuclear computer codes and nuclear cross-sections.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience.
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major and 4 years nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).

Job Requirements
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the applicable national consensus codes, standards, and DOE requirements/guidelines used in NCS evaluation
  • Demonstrated skill in effective planning, writing, organization, communication, schedule compliance, and management of technical issues

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

This position may require entry into the Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712), which requires successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and may include a counterintelligence‑scope polygraph examination.

This position may be categorized as a “designated position” identified by 10 C.F.R. Part 709, requiring successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation that may include a counterintelligence‑scope polygraph examination.
