Overview
We are seeking a Thermal Mechanical Engineer who will focus on conceptualization, design, build, and deployment of Electromagnetic Isotope Separation (EMIS) devices through the creation of sophisticated 3D CAD models and detailed design packages suitable for fabrication. The position is located in the Plasma Enrichment Deployment & Engineering Group of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities- Conceptualize, design, develop and improve plasma-based enrichment technology related components using 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (Solid Works).
- Create 2D drawings for fabrication and communicate with staff and suppliers throughout the fabrication and assembly process.
- Produce and analyze thermal models using Solid Works and ANSYS or similar tools.
- Produce and maintain As‑Built documentation for complex systems to maintain configuration control.
- Ensure drawings and designs comply with applicable engineering codes and with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
- Direct and participate in the installation, testing, and development of designed systems, equipment, and components in collaboration with team members.
- Coordinate internal and external design reviews and facilitate tracking and closeout of actions taken during these reviews.

- BS/BA degree in an engineering or related discipline with 5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience collaboratively creating 3D components, assemblies, and prints from ideas, rough sketches, red lines, and notes.
- Proficiency with Solid Works 3D CAD design software.
- Experience conducting thermal analysis of mechanical systems using ANSYS, COMSOL, or similar modeling software.
- Proven track record of design for Safety, design for Manufacturing and Assembly, and knowledge of industry best practices, tools, and technologies.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with diverse teams of engineers, scientists, and technicians.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance from the Department of Energy; requires U.S. Citizenship.
- Experience with CAD management using a PDM environment such as Solid Works Vault.
- Familiarity with machining and fabrication processes for challenging components of routine and specialty materials (e.g., ceramics, graphite, refractory metals).
- Knowledge of conduction, convection, radiation, heat exchangers, and cooling system design.
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools.
- Knowledge of welding processes.
- Fundamental knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T ASME Y14.5).
- Enthusiasm for working in a fast‑paced team environment.
- Experience in the design, development, and installation of electromagnetic isotope separation related technologies (high vacuum, high voltage up to 75 kVDC, electromagnets, RF power, specialty materials).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivation as a self‑starter who can work independently and creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast‑paced research environment, set priorities, accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changing needs.
- Q clearance required; this is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position, requiring a pre‑placement drug test and ongoing random testing.
