OverviewWe are seeking a Metrology Engineer who will focus on providing in‑laboratory calibration services to the ORNL research and operations community as well as limited external customers. The Metrology Engineer serves as a technical lead and deputy operations for calibrations in their assigned disciplines, ensuring measurement standards, traceability, and ISO/IEC 17025 compliance while reviewing calibration results and resolving technical issues. They also develop and improve calibration methods/capabilities (including uncertainty analysis and supporting software), interface with customers, and provide technical direction and training to metrology technicians.
This position resides in the Measurement Services group in the Fabrication, Instrumentation, and Inspection Division (FIID), Facilities and Operations (F&O) Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
- Serve as technical contact for Metrology calibration disciplines, including Dimensional, Torque, Force, Mass/Balance, Pressure, Temperature/Humidity, Air Velocity, and Electrical.
- Review and approve calibration reports, uncertainty budgets, inspection reports, and other documentation.
- Develop and peer‑review calibration procedures using MET/CAL, MET/TEAM, Lab View, and written formats.
- Ensure continued care and traceability of ORNL Metrology Laboratory reference standards within assigned disciplines.
- Interface with customers on technical problems and determine and document calibration requirements.
- Maintain a safe research environment by raising safety concerns and applying hazard‑aware procedures.
- Protect, package, preserve, and properly handle and store laboratory standards and equipment under ORNL Metrology Laboratory control.
- Support and expand the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2017.
- Stay current with new measurement techniques in assigned disciplines.
- Recommend training opportunities for technicians to Technical and/or Program Managers.
- Evaluate and document qualifications of suppliers and subcontractors.
- Evaluate and document environmental limits for laboratory equipment and take appropriate action for out‑of‑limit conditions.
- Provide training, technical direction and support to metrology technicians performing calibrations.
- Maintain status of laboratory standards, ensuring proper close‑out calibration or checks for decommissioned or postponed standards.

- BS in engineering or related technical field.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience working in a calibration laboratory or similar setting.
- Experience working in an ISO‑17025 accredited laboratory.
- Experience with a metrology asset management system such as Fluke’s MET/TEAM.
- Proficiency in uncertainty budgeting.
- Understanding of calibration traceability principles.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word or similar software.
- Experience with Temperature, Humidity, Pressure, Electrical, Torque, Force, Dimensional, Mass/Balance calibration techniques.
- Experience directing work of bargaining unit and non‑bargaining unit staff.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Self‑starter with ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced research environment.
- Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines in a changing environment.
- Physical requirements:

- Q Clearance: requires ability to obtain and maintain a DOE clearance; position requires WSAP testing and random drug testing.
