Systems Engineer, Engineering Design & Technologists, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineer
The Engineering Management Division (EMD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a Design and Program engineer to support implementation of design and configuration management in the Research & Development (R&D) environment. This individual will also be responsible for management, implementation, and oversight of the site-wide glovebox lifecycle safety and integrity program.
This position supports the management and implementation of ORNL’s site-wide glovebox lifecycle safety and integrity program and assists R&D in safely defining their systems with engineering integrity and structured configuration management.
Glove boxes are typically used as an engineering control to protect workers from hazards and to control the atmosphere for work with air and moisture sensitive materials. R&D systems often incorporate engineered controls in their design to facilitate safe operation. This position will support R&D staff, operations personnel, facility management organizations, and the Engineering Management System Owner (MSO) in the successful and compliant implementation of the glovebox program.
This position will also support the deployment of hazard based subject areas that require a design component to facilitate system evaluation, operation and training. Additional duties may include assisting in establishing engineering safety and code-based requirements for new construction.
- Support the implementation and development of the glovebox program.
- Provide expertise to support design, commissioning, operations and maintenance of glove boxes to R&D and operations staff.
- Develop and maintain the glovebox subject area incorporating user feedback, industry experience and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Support R&D staff in developing system designs facilitating evaluation, operator training and configuration management.
- Support operations and R&D staff in establishing baseline engineering code and standards requirements for design.
- Use the design process to implement chemical, pressure, material handling, compressed gas and system safety programs.
- Assist in development and implementation of assurance and assessment strategy for the glovebox program and other assessments as requested, working with the Engineering MSO, POC and Quality Representative.
- Collaborate with R&D, operations staff, safety and health professionals to understand work plans and glovebox/design needs; prepare specifications and perform designs; coordinate with facilities management; support SMEs / program managers for related engineering programs; abide by the Battelle Safe Conduct of Research Principles; and support local quality representative in assessing and maintaining applicable subject area standards.
- Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service; promote equal opportunity and foster a respectful workplace.
- BS degree in an engineering related field (mechanical preferred) from an ABET‑accredited program and 5+ years of relevant experience, or MS in Engineering with 4+ years of relevant experience.
- Experience in a research environment including field/facility experience with research systems and glove boxes in evaluation, modification, design, troubleshooting, calculations, and commissioning.
- Good oral communication and technical writing skills; proficiency with common office computer software; strong sense of customer service; ability to collaborate with ORNL staff from other engineering disciplines.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self‑starter who can work independently and participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
