We are seeking a Fire Protection Technician who will support the Fire Protection Engineering group in the Engineering Management Division, Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The ideal candidate will have a strong background in one or more areas of specialization related to fire protection (e.g., fire alarm, fire suppression, fire barriers, fire prevention, etc.)
as well as an eagerness to learn and apply knowledge in other specializations.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform inspections of ORNL’s fire protection and life safety features.
- Support the testing and maintenance of ORNL’s fire protection and life safety features.
- Support asset management efforts for ORNL’s fire protection and life safety equipment.
- Support troubleshooting and repair activities for ORNL fire alarm systems.
- Support upgrades to building fire alarm systems.
- Support chemical inventory management efforts.
- Support the design, installation, modification, and commissioning efforts for fire- and life safety-related systems/features.
- Support design reviews of planned construction and building/process modifications.
- Support and monitor building construction to ensure alignment with the design and specifications.
- Be able to train and support other ORNL staff in knowledge of fire alarm systems.
- Perform and support fire prevention education efforts for ORNL staff.
- Review work packages for fire protection and life safety issues and compliance.
- Assess fire risks and recommend solutions which balance compliance with research needs.
- Serve on support teams and special projects, as assigned.
- Support the Engineering Management Division Director, the Building Code Official, and the Fire Protection Authority Having Jurisdiction.
- Work with and provide technical support to the ORNL Fire Department.
- Abide by the Battelle Safe Conduct of Research Principles.

Basic Qualifications:
- An AS degree and 10 years of experience in fire protection and/or life safety or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
- An AS or higher degree in fire science or another technical discipline.
- EST-3 Certification.
- EST-4 Certification.
- Detail-oriented self-starter with the ability to work independently and communicate effectively.
- Strong background in fire protection or life safety.
- Relevant credentials such as NICET, NFPA, ICC, or state certification(s).
- Familiarity with NFPA Codes and Standards.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Special Requirements:
- Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
- Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
- Q or L clearance:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
