R&D Staff - Applied Research for Mobility Systems
We are seeking a research and development staff who will focus on the development of modeling and control for complex systems seen in transportation, power systems and industrial processes. This position resides in the Applied Research for Mobility Research Group in the Vehicle and Mobility Systems Research Section, the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
MajorDuties/Responsibilities
- Be responsible for conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research assignments related to the modeling and control for complex systems in manufacturing (paper making and steel making), transportation and power grid (hydropower and transmission systems, data analysis, etc.).
- Develop novel reduced order models for complex systems simulated by computational fluid dynamics and digital twin, performing fluid dynamics analysis, system modeling, analyzing results, preparing technical documents and research publications.
- Secure new funding to support own research and potentially others.
- The work will involve interacting and collaborating with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry.

- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, or a related field with at least two years of experience or a MS and at least seven years of relevant experience.
- Strong background of training (or other direct experience) in control system design, simulation and optimization.
- Skilled in project management, proposal writing, funding acquisition, and sponsor/collaborator interaction.
- Good publications track record on relevant areas related to advanced modeling, control and optimization.
- Some experience in supervising junior researchers.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast‑paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever‑changing needs.
All employees must possess a Real –compliant form of identification and obtain/mAintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card in accordance with DOE Order 473.1A and HSPD‑12. A federal Tier 1 background check is required for all positions.
Foreign nationals must meet the Department of Energy residency requirement of three consecutive years in the U.S. before being eligible for the PIV credential. Alternative Local Site Specific Risk Determination (LSSO) may be used if the residency requirement is not met.
