What You'll DoWeapons Product Engineers serve as the primary contact to establish product definition and work scope by developing the appropriate manufacturing plans, product specifications, work instructions, and other documents necessary to manage customer requirements. They monitor and track progress once work is initiated by operations and work directly with operations to resolve technical or administrative issues as necessary, and provide feedback to program managers.
They serve as a point of contact for communicating work scope to production areas by issuing all documents required to support production, certification, assembly of components, issuing work requests, product engineering transmittals, advance change orders, engineering change requests, and assisting in the development of routings and schedules for the production areas to accomplish the work scope. They may also assist in major procurement efforts associated with weapons program work and work with outside vendors as necessary to procure hardware and/or materials that are outside of Y-12's current manufacturing capabilities.
Weapons Product Engineers serve as the primary technical point of contact between the Y-12 Production Agency, the Design Agencies, and other Nuclear Weapons Complex Production Agencies for activities associated with all phases of weapons programs. They may serve as the point of contact for all model-based engineering efforts for the Y-12 site and interface directly with other sites across the nuclear weapons complex.
They participate as a member of product realization teams for all future weapons programs and may serve as a technical subject matter expert for disposition operations. They work closely with process engineers and waste engineers to characterize weapon materials and related materials for packaging and disposition efforts, and support production waste-generating activities. They may require a general understanding of waste characterization, treatment, packaging, transportation, and disposal of waste generated at Department of Energy nuclear facilities.

Job Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Physical Science (Chemistry, Physics, or related) from an ABET-accredited program in the United States, or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET, and 2 years of relevant experience. OR MS in Engineering/Physical Science. OR PhD in Engineering/Physical Science.
- A minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at the time of offer and confirmed by transcript. Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.
- 3.0/4.0 minimum cumulative GPA for a Bachelor degree
- 3.3 minimum cumulative GPA for a Master degree
- 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA for a PhD
- The applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major, 2 years job-related experience, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). ( O 426.2A)
Job Requirements
- Six years of Y-12 or NNSA plant engineering experience, of which 2 years are in direct support of NNSA production operations is strongly preferred
- Previous work experience with weapons programs and materials
- Experience with and knowledge of Y-12 weapons materials and production operations, including an understanding of how the plant interfaces with other agencies of the Nuclear Weapons Complex
