Job SummarySMSI LLC is seeking a Mechanical Designer and Technician to assist our client, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This position will be onsite in Oak Ridge, TN. The candidate will focus on the modeling, design and detailing of components and assemblies. They will assist in the assembly and maintenance of cryogenic systems for R&D activities and for major international fusion experimental facilities.
This work is conducted in support of ongoing scientific research and technology development for the U.S. Department of Energy fusion energy programs.
- Work on the design, development and improvement of fusion technology related components using 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
- Collaborate with senior designers, engineers, and physicists in the creation of 3D components and assemblies will be a regular function of the position.
- Create 2D drawings to be used for fabrication, communicate with engineering and design staff through the fabrication and assembly process.
- Support not only mechanical design, but also participate in the mechanical assembly, disassembly, and maintenance of these systems.
- Support senior technical staff in a variety of projects involving vacuum, cryogenics, high pressure, and electromagnetic fields.
- A strong understanding of the application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and American Welding Society (AWS) notation in engineering drawings is required.
- Significant experience with one or more CAD programs such as Creo (formerly Pro/Engineer), Solid Works or Catia is required.
- Significant experience in Creo (Pro/Engineer) and an associated PDM (Windchill) is required.
- Familiarity with fabrication processes and design for manufacturability is required.
- Must be a self-starter, able to work independently or in a team.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
- Experience in the design of components related to vacuum or cryogenic systems is preferred.
- Experience in hands‑on troubleshooting, assembly, and disassembly of mechanical systems.
- This position requires an associate’s degree with 5‑6 years of relevant experience or a high school diploma with 7‑8 years relevant experience.
