Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. We are seeking an entry level Electrical Engineer who will support the Electrical Power Conversion Group in the Research Accelerator Division (RAD), Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at ORNL.
As an Electrical Engineer you will support operation, maintenance, repairs, and upgrades of High Voltage Converter Modulator Systems, Magnet Power Supplies, Accelerator Beam Kickers, and High Voltage Beam Chopper systems in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator complex. This requires project and work planning; specification and procedure writing; system design, including validation testing; and equipment troubleshooting and repair. You will report to the Electrical Power Conversion Group Leader and collaborate with the Electrical Power Conversion Group members, ORNL and SNS staff, professional peers, and collaborators from non-ORNL institutions, ORNL business services, vendors, and visitors.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Evaluate and enhance the performance of existing High Voltage Converter Modulators, magnet power supplies, kicker, and chopper systems to address limitations and obsolescence challenges.
- Provide critical accelerator operations support for SNS facilities, ensuring at least 90% availability of neutron production, including occasional after-hours call-ins.
- Assist in the planning, management, and execution of maintenance and upgrade projects.
- Utilize work control tools to efficiently conduct these activities.
- Support the development of design, installation, training, testing, maintenance, and procurement documentation and procedures.
- Specify, develop, and procure subsystems and components.
- Present your work at conferences, workshops, collaboration meetings and sponsor reviews.
- Work with other staff members to develop proposals to perform research on innovative accelerator electrical applications.
- Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
- As a member of the ORNL scientific community, you will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct. Our full code of conduct, and a statement by the Lab Director's office can be found here: ;/li>
- Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
- A BS degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
- Solid understanding of analog and digital circuits and electric circuit theory.
- Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
- Strong knowledge of power electronics, with practical experience from coursework or projects.
- Basic understanding of electromagnetic fields and high-power semiconductor devices.
- Familiarity with troubleshooting electronic systems and using standard laboratory test equipment.
- Ability to create and maintain engineering documentation, including drawings, reports, and specifications.
- Experience with circuit simulation, mechanical CAD, and printed circuit board design tools.
- Knowledge of electrical safety principles and basic AC power distribution concepts.
