What You'll Do
Metrology engineer in Oak Ridge Metrology Center (ORMC) with technical oversight of calibration processes:
- Maintain the calibration of ORMC standards
- Define the calibration requirements and procedures for metrology standards.
- Ensure standards are current within the calibration recall system database.
- Ensure availability and traceability of necessary measurement standards.
- Troubleshoot, repair, replace failing standards and address non-conformance impacts.
- Provide guidance and technical oversight by investigating problems and revising procedures to support continued calibration activities.
- Prepare procedures, datasheets, work packages and calibration reports based on customer requirements, manufacturer's specifications, and/or national standards defining calibration accepted practices.
- Research and implement safety, uncertainty, and efficiency improvements for measurement methods.
- Provide technical justification and Cost Benefit Analysis as needed for capital equipment improvements.
- Provide expert technical advice and consultations to production operations and customer organizations in the measurement and calibration processes for assigned areas.
- Approve customer calibration requirements and establish equipment calibration intervals.
- Assist with the development and implementation of work instructions for calibrations performed on-site.

- Bachelor of Science in Engineering/Physical Science [Chemistry, Physics, or related] from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET. OR MS in Engineering /Physical science. OR PhD in Engineering /Physical science.
- There is a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript. Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.
- 3.0/4.0 minimum cumulative GPA for Bachelor degree
- 3.3 minimum cumulative GPA for Master degree
- 3.5 minimum cumulative GPA for PhD
In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities.

- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office software.
- Must be able to manage multiple tasks at once, and make sound decisions for determining work priorities.
- Must have good organizational skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to interface effectively with all levels of management, both within and external to Y-12.
- Working experience in other software is a plus, including but not limited to:
LabVIEW, Met Cal, SAP etc. - Experience writing technical procedures as subject matter expert and calculating measurement system uncertainties and/or accuracies is desirable.
- Knowledge of statistics and metrology highly recommended.
- Expertise in engineering instrumentation and quality measurement systems
- Ability to interpret information from technical requirements, management requirements, and industry standards to support the implementation of technical projects.
- High discipline in documentation, traceability, and audit readiness
- Ability to clearly express and document technical issues using Microsoft Office or other software packages.
