ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a Facility Safety Engineer to join our team supporting the DOE's Y-12 National Security Complex
! This position is full-time and will be based out of Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nuclear facility safety and safety basis technical support for the management and operation of DOE nuclear facilities at the Y-12 National Security Complex.

  • Ensure facility safety activities comply with 10 CFR 830, Subpart B, applicable DOE requirements, and nuclear safety standards, including DOE-STD-3009-94 and DOE-STD-.

  • Lead and support hazard identification, hazard screening, and hazard evaluation activities for nuclear facility operations and modifications.

  • Perform and review accident analyses and consequence evaluations for postulated nuclear facility events.

  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend engineered and administrative controls to prevent or mitigate potential accidents and hazardous conditions.

  • Develop, maintain, and review safety basis documentation, including Safety Analysis Reports (SARs), Documented Safety Analyses (DSAs), and Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs).

  • Evaluate facility modifications, operational changes, and proposed activities for potential impacts to the approved safety basis.

  • Provide technical interpretation and guidance regarding DOE nuclear safety requirements, standards, and facility safety practices.

  • Address and support resolution of nuclear safety issues, including technical matters identified by the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB).

  • Serve as a Lead Facility Safety Engineer supporting nuclear facility complexes and provide technical leadership for facility safety activities.

  • Interface with engineering, operations, nuclear safety, management, and other technical organizations to ensure safety basis requirements are appropriately implemented.

  • Review technical documentation, engineering changes, and facility activities to verify consistency with established safety controls and authorization basis requirements.

  • Provide technical guidance and recommendations to management regarding nuclear facility hazards, accident prevention, mitigation strategies, and safety basis compliance.

  • Support the development and qualification of Facility Safety Engineering personnel through training, coaching, and technical mentoring.

  • Mentor newly hired Facility Safety Engineers in safety basis development, hazard analysis, accident analysis, regulatory requirements, and Y-12 facility safety processes.

  • Maintain the technical expertise necessary to provide qualified Facility Safety Engineering support for high-hazard nuclear operations and facilities.

Requirements

  • Education & Years of Experience – Bachelor’s Degree in engineering and 15+ years of direct experience with 10 or more years of DOE-specific experience Nuclear/Safety Analysis Engineering.

  • Citizenship – To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.

  • Clearance – To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed.

  • Demonstrated experience providing nuclear facility safety and safety basis support within DOE nuclear facilities.

  • Strong knowledge of 10 CFR 830, Subpart B – Safety Basis Requirements.

  • Working knowledge of applicable DOE nuclear safety standards, including DOE-STD-3009-94 and DOE-STD-.

  • Extensive experience with hazard identification, hazard screening, and hazard evaluation processes.

  • Experience performing and reviewing accident analyses and consequence evaluations for nuclear facility operations.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and evaluate engineered and administrative controls for the prevention and mitigation of postulated accidents.

  • Experience developing, reviewing, and maintaining Documented Safety Analyses (DSAs), Safety Analysis Reports (SARs), and Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs).

  • Strong understanding of DOE safety basis development, implementation, and maintenance requirements.

  • Experience evaluating facility modifications and operational changes for impacts to the approved nuclear safety basis.
