Specialty Mechanical Engineer

Specialty Mechanical Engineers in the Projects Equipment Design Engineering organization develop design and procurement documentation for custom and first-of-a-kind mechanical systems, including glovebox systems, furnaces, high-vacuum systems, and metal casting/machining equipment. This role involves collaborating with designers, performing detailed engineering calculations, and producing complete build-to-print fabrication packages. The engineer supports the full lifecycle of specialty equipment design, from initial requirements through fabrication documentation.

Key responsibilities include developing build-to-print design packages for custom mechanical systems, preparing procurement documents including equipment specifications, statements of work, and datasheets, performing engineering calculations and analyses such as finite element analysis, structural and seismic analysis, ergonomic and kinematic evaluations, heat-transfer calculations, producing complete fabrication packages including drawings, specifications, procurement documents, and supporting analyses, leading multi-discipline engineering efforts involving mechanical, electrical, instrumentation/controls, HVAC, piping, process, and welding contributors, and ensuring compliance with relevant industry codes, standards, and best practices.

Preferred qualifications include advanced experience designing custom mechanical systems, strong knowledge of industry codes and standards relevant to specialty equipment design, proven ability to write detailed procurement and fabrication specifications for custom equipment, background in engineering analysis including FEA, structural and seismic analysis, ergonomics, kinematics, and thermal analysis, experience managing or coordinating multi-discipline engineering teams, and proficiency in 3D CAD modeling using PTC Creo and/or Solid Works.

Minimum requirements include a bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited institution and a minimum of 10 years of experience designing and specifying custom mechanical equipment. Q clearance highly preferred.
